Residents of Cozumel (not the government, but people who actually live and work there) are saying that the damage was significant but not catastrophic. Power was out for a while, as trees and power lines were blown down. Some windows were destroyed and some water damage, but most structures survived. Cruises have returned to Cozumel, as well. I'm not sure about the mainland though.

We were in Playa Del Carmen and then went to Tulum. It was a hot day and there was a lot of walking. Plenty of history to see there, but you need to know that's what it is all about.
We also went snorkeling at Xel-Ha (aka the Blue Lagoon) and because it was hot and humid, we had more actual fun at that place that day.
History and ruins...plus some really nice views of the Caribbean, Tulum. Swimming and snorkeling and somewhat of a water park atmosphere...Xel-Ha.
Or take in both like we did. Get hot and sweaty, and then swim and snorkel.
