Members of the National Guard headquartered at Jackson Barracks were part of a major mission in Iraq this week to rescue an Australian hostage.

The 256th Brigade Combat Team was instrumental in the rescue of Douglas Wood, who was held captive for six weeks.

The troops were taking part in “Operation lightning,” a broader counter insurgency operation in northwest Baghdad, when they found wood.

Wood was taken to the medical facility run by the 256th and is recuperating from his ordeal.
