Thousands of customers without power throughout SE Texas
ABC13 Eyewitness News
(6/15/05 - HOUSTON) — There’s a major power outage underway in southeast Texas. Customers in at least eight counties are affected.
A transmission line failure is being blamed for knocking out the power to customers in Montgomery, Liberty, Walker, Grimes, Polk, San Jacinto, Hardin and Tyler counties.
The outage apparently began around 7pm Wednesday. According to Debi Derrick with Entegy, the line failure caused the Lewis Creek plant near Conroe to go off line. Up to 100,000 customers are without power.
Local authorities are running back up generators to provide power. All 911 systems are reportedly operating normally.
Conroe police are asking residents to stay home, however, if possible. They are calling in extra staff to help man intersections without traffic lights. They have also requested residents avoid calling police to report power outages and call for emergencies only.
The Conroe Regional Medical Center is on drive-by status and they've enacted their disaster plan, meaning they are asking personnel to stay at the hospital after their shifts have ended. Ten prisons are also affected by the power outage. They have gone into lock down mode.
Crews are working on the situation. Officials hope to have electricity restored sometime Thursday morning.
