Updated: 7:28 p.m. ET June 13, 2005SANTIAGO, Chile - A 7.9 magnitude earthquake shook northern Chile late Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site.

Local television in northern Chile said the quake drove residents from their homes and caused power outages. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Local authorities could not immediately be reached for comment.

This is the first I've heard... sounds like it hit in an unpopulated area if it "drove" residents from homes instead of them being "trapped" as in the house collapsed.

The hypocenter depth was 110 km so it was a deep shock which means that the effects on the surface will not be as great as they would be for a shallow fdepth shock. Will be some building damage but probably in the MMVII-VIII range rather than IX-X as it would be for a shallow depth MM7.9.
