******UPDATE*******

Strong earthquake rocks Indonesia's Sumatra

JAKARTA (Agencies): A strong earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale hit western Indonesia on Sunday, but its center was too deep to cause surface damage, a meteorology officer here said on Monday.

The quake, which hit at 9:35 p.m. (14:35 GMT), was centered some 600 kilometers (370 miles) under the surface, about 100 kilometers northwest of Palembang city in south Sumatra province, the Meteorology and Geophysics office in Jakarta said.

It added that said the center of the quake was too deep to cause any damage on the surface, and that there were no reports of casualties or damage.

Although it was felt across Sumatra and Java island, and as far as Lombok island east of Bali, it was most strong in Bengkulu, 324 kilometers southwest of the quake's center.

"There was no damage reported, but the earthquake did cause some panic among the local population," said Manaf, an officer from the meteorology office in Bengkulu city.

Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common in Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 17,000 islands and islets strung along the so-called 'Pacific Ring of Fire'.

Earthquakes occasionally cause widespread damage and loss of life.

An earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale that struck Indonesia's resource-rich Papua in February killed at least 30 people and left around 26,000 people homeless.

In 2000, Indonesia was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9, killing more than 100 people. (**)

That is a stong eathquake. You don't usually see earthquakes above 7.5 anyway. An eathquake above a 7.0 is a major one, and I am glad that it appears not many were hurt.
