Do you believe in the power of a White Bison?

#1 Postby azsnowman » Mon May 24, 2004 8:21 am

Here's an interesting article from this mornings Az Republic......just curious, how many believe in the legend of the White Buffalo? For the record, "I DO!"

White bison born near Flagstaff

Keith Davis/Special for The Arizona Republic

This white bison calf, born Saturday at Spirit Mountain Ranch near Flagstaff, is very rare.

'1-in-10 million' occurrence is expected to draw a crowd

The owners of a small bison herd near Flagstaff were surprised Saturday morning to find one of their rare white buffaloes had given birth to something even rarer: a white calf.

A white calf is a one-in-10 million occurrence, said Keith Davis, a spokesman for Spirit Mountain Ranch.

"This is so rare specifically because she was born white," Davis said. "The others were born red (like normal buffaloes) and turned white."

The birth of a white bison is meaningful for many Native American tribes, especially Plains Indians such as the Lakota, who consider it a symbol of rebirth when the world's people are in troubled times.

"The white buffalo is such a phenomenon because they are so rare," said Dena Riley, who owns the ranch with her husband, Jim.

None of her buffaloes is albino but rather a mutation of the usual fur color of dark brown to black, Riley said. Of 11 bison on the ranch, four are white, not including the newborn.

The animals on the ranch are also pure bison, proven by DNA testing at a California lab, she added, and not a mix of bison and cattle, known as beefalo. That mixture more often results in white offspring, she said.

The ranch was moved onto its 5-acre site near the San Francisco Peaks in December 2001, Riley said, and has had visitors from around the globe to see white bison.

I do either.
Or better: I do believe Native Americans had a special relationship with the nature, the earth, the animals. They knew things we will never understand.

Here is one of my favourite comic books:

I hope it is indeed a symbol of better times ahead for all!!!

Paolo you hit the nail on the head with your statement about the Native Americans!!! It is too bad that it seems ALL of us are too busy to research and understand the things our Native americans did/do understand.

Yes the white buffalo does seem mystical and magical. David, you're so right. In these troubled times it is a wonderful sign.

I thought that it had some kind of mystical meaning as well. I do hope it is a sign of good times to come!

Paolo - this is one of the few times I'm agreeing with you. The Indians knew and RESPECTED nature.

Speaking of Native Americans...there's a tribe here in Eastern NC...the Haliwa Saponi...they have Pow-Wows every so often. :)

Thank you for sharing about the White Bison with us, Dennis! :D

The Sacred White Buffalo

WHITE BUFFALO CALF WOMAN
Brings The First Pipe
As told by: Joseph Chasing Horse

We Lakota people have a prophecy about the white buffalo calf. How that prophecy originated was that we have a sacred bundle, a sacred peace pipe, that was brought to us about 2,000 years ago by what we know as the White Buffalo Calf Woman.

The story goes that she appeared to two warriors at that time. These two warriors were out hunting buffalo, hunting for food in the sacred Black Hills of South Dakota, and they saw a big body coming toward them. And they saw that it was a white buffalo calf. As it came closer to them, it turned into a beautiful young Indian girl.

That time one of the warriors thought bad in his mind, and so the young girl told him to step forward. And when he did step forward, a black cloud came over his body, and when the black cloud disappeared, the warrior who had bad thoughts was left with no flesh or blood on his bones. The other warrior kneeled and began to pray. And when he prayed, the white buffalo calf who was now an Indian girl told him to go back to his people and warn them that in four days she was going to bring a sacred bundle.

So the warrior did as he was told. He went back to his people and he gathered all the elders and all the leaders and all the people in a circle and told them what she had instructed him to do. And sure enough, just as she said she would, on the fourth day she came.

They say a cloud came down from the sky, and off of the cloud stepped the white buffalo calf. As it rolled onto the earth, the calf stood up and became this beautiful young woman who was carrying the sacred bundle in her hand.

As she entered into the circle of the nation, she sang a sacred song and took the sacred bundle to the people who were there to take of her. She spent four days among our people and taught them about the sacred bundle, the meaning of it. She taught them seven sacred ceremonies.

One of them was the sweat lodge, or the purification ceremony. One of them was the naming ceremony, child naming. The third was the healing ceremony. The fourth one was the making of relatives or the adoption ceremony. The fifth one was the marriage ceremony. The sixth was the vision quest. And the seventh was the sundance ceremony, the people's ceremony for all of the nation.

She brought us these seven sacred ceremonies and taught our people the songs and the traditional ways. And she instructed our people that as long as we performed these ceremonies we would always remain caretakers and guardians of sacred land. She told us that as long as we took care of it and respected it that our people would never die and would always live.

When she was done teaching all our people, she left the way she came. She went out of the circle, and as she was leaving she turned and told our people that she would return one day for the sacred bundle. And she left the sacred bundle, which we still have to this very day.

The sacred bundle is known as the White Buffalo Calf Pipe because it was brought by the White Buffalo Calf Woman. It is kept in a sacred place (Green Grass) on the Cheyenne River Indian reservation in South Dakota. it's kept by a man who is known as the keeper of the White Buffalo Calf Pipe, Arvol Looking Horse.

When White Buffalo Calf Woman promised to return again, she made some prophecies at that time One of those prophesies was that the birth of a white buffalo calf would be a sign that it would be near the time when she would return again to purify the world. What she meant by that was that she would bring back harmony again and balance, spiritually.

No matter what happens to Miracle in the coming months and years, Joseph Chasing Horse says the birth is a sign from the Great Spirit and the ensuing age of harmony and balance it represents cannot be revoked. That doesn't mean, of course, that the severe trials Native Americans have endured since the arrival of Europeans on these shores are over.

Indeed, the Lakota nation mounted the longest court case in U.S. history in an unsuccessful effort to regain control of the Black Hills, the sacred land on which the White Buffalo Calf Woman appeared 2,000 years ago.

Still, despite their ongoing struggles, Native Americans are heartened by the appearance of a white buffalo in Janesville, and have hope for a harmonious and prosperous future.

"Mention that we are praying, many of the medicine people, the spiritual leaders, the elders, are praying for the world," says Joseph Chasing Horse. "We are praying that mankind does wake up and think about the future, for we haven't just inherited this earth from our ancestors, but we are borrowing it from our unborn children."

Yes i believe

#8 Postby SolarQuestions » Mon May 24, 2004 8:17 pm

Yes i believe the white buffalo is an oman of change ...there are many more omans of change happening more and more everyday until that great transition does happen. This bad old world is going to have a mighty wake up call that is for sure.

The ...what was it ...two to three comets in the sky at once recently ...when was the last time that happened? That is very rare and most definitely an oman.

All cultures and societies are going to experience more omans to come.

And in my opinion "indian" is more of a frame of mind than a blood line thing...There are those that respect and love the Earth all over this world. They want to live with it in balance and harmony ...They want to enjoy a more simple way of life. I know for sure i am one of them ...i already enjoy a very simple way of life ....and dont point out my computer .....lol...i use it only to spread the word of peace and harmony with all life. Its a good thing ....one day if need be ill sacrifice it for a better world.

I think that the Indian people as a whole was taught to respect nature and live in harmony with her. There are alot of people from all different races, etc. that feel the same way as you and can relate and appreciate what the Indian culture is all about.

Something big is going...

#14 Postby SolarQuestions » Tue May 25, 2004 8:21 am

Something big is going to happen that is for sure.

I dont know if im part native american or not but my whole life i sure felt like one ..i was more at home down the park in the city i lived in ...i always wanted to be the Indian and not he cowboy when we played cowboys and Indians. I use to have dreams of being an Indian...but my last name is Italian ... I believe its a spirit thing ...i think some Indian spirit entered my body when i was born.

I love the Earth so much i wouldnt buy a car or truck if i was a trillionaire . I ride a bicycle. I try to find as much unspoiled land as i can i just take it all in.

The Indians have been on this land from S America to N America for thousands and thousands of years ...white man for only 500 years ...the Indian spirit is very strong here i can feel it.

P.S- i even have certain prayers and rituals i made up myself for the Earth. I believe the Earth is alive and getting stronger everyday...she can give us all the bounty we can imagine....or she can take every single thing we have from us. The choice is up to us. How we treat her....Long live Mother Earth

What does your quote at the bottom mean? "only you can prevent radical environmentalism".

Meaning only you can prevent the environmentalists from stopping beneficial ops like logging......Dennis is in an area that has had several fires in the last 3 years...

Not the solution

#19 Postby SolarQuestions » Tue May 25, 2004 10:24 am

chopping down old trees is not the solution...it will only make things worse. There is an old belief that you leave the oldest trees alone. You only take the young ones and even those you leave a good percentage behind to keep the forest full and thick....More trees mean more life. Life is a good thing not a bad thing. What this continent use to look like hundreds of years ago would boggle our minds ...the forest was much thicker and healthier and denser than it is today ...with lots of healthy trees and a forest rich with life. The first European settlers wrote back to Europe that they could not believe the abundance of life here in the "new world" ....They were absolutely amazed according to their letters.

The reason there are so many forest fires now days is because of a changing environment globally ...and it will only get worse before it gets better. And killing so many trees is not the solution. Like i said it will get worse...mankind has too much of a kill solution for everything he considers a "problem".....Remember that lake in Maryland that had the foreign fish problem ....they said the fish was too aggressive and they would upset the ecosystem if they did not intervene and poison the whole entire lake and kill everything in it. That was so wrong it was amazing how wrong that was what they did. Didnt these people ever hear of Darwins "survival of the fittest" ....the other fish would have adapted and the lake would have been more abundant with the foreign fish than without it....over time....they just were not patient. The foreign fish was introduced and what was done was done ...the only thing to do was let nature takes its course ....but letting nature take its course is very frowned upon now days. But it doesnt matter because nature will take its course and all we can do is ride the wave...if we try to fight it that is very bad....us humans are trying to hold the ocean back with a broom ...what we need is a surf board of respect and just ride that wave out and let it take us to a better world....have faith in Mother Earth ...not some toxin that mankind dumps in a lake to "fix it" ...or a chain saw to make our lives better.....there were no chain saws hundreds of years ago and the forest was so thick, rich and alive and healthy....and i have no faith or trust in chemicals. Look at all the dead zones around the mouths of rivers and in seas and oceans now days ...and its getting worse ....Mother Earth is getting very mad .....Watch for more earthquakes of greater magnitude and in more unusual places...that will happen ...along with more volcanic eruptions and more virulent diseases. And more vicious animal attacks. All signs of a world in chaos where mankind is using too much "heavy hand" to live with his world. If man keeps giving "heavy hand" to Earth...Earth will give HEAVY HAND to mankind and that will be the end of our "civilization". Peace.

P.S- human beings are just one animal here on this planet and so many other species were created by evolution or God ...call it what you will ..but it is obvious those creatures exist to fill a job that needs to be done in the world to keep it healthy ...Human beings are trying to take over the job of all the animals that did that job just with simple living...nothing more. Its as if there is a body called Earth ...and it has its different parts like our body...heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, intestines....and each part is a different animal species ...but the human race is trying to do the job of the different body parts....its like the heart is trying to do the job of the kidneys, lungs, liver and doing none of them well ....the parts are dying and the heart is killing them.

Dennis doesn't advocate "logging". Where he lives and what he has been dealing with through business has to do with "thinning" of the forests. There is a big difference. Thinning helps to keep the forests healthy and especially in drought stricken areas like the SW, removes fuel for the many potential wildfires. He's come across a few "radical" enviormental agencies that have gone to court to prevent work such as this which only helped to feed the Rodeo-Chedeski (sp?) last year.

I never heard of the process until I read on of Dennis's many posts. I originally thought like you, SQ, that we were talking about logging, but I've learned that this is something that is necessary to keep the forest alive.
