Boy Charged in 8-Year-Old Georgia Girl's Death
By ELIOTT C. McLAUGHLIN, AP

CARROLLTON, Ga. (April 28) - Police say a 12-year-old boy used his hands to strangle a third-grader who disappeared while riding her bicycle to a nearby friend's house.

Amy Michelle Yates, 8, was found dead Monday night, hours after she went missing. Tuesday afternoon, the boy was arrested and charged with murder.

Carroll County Sheriff Terry Langley and Chief Deputy Sheriff Brad Robinson would not disclose what led investigators to the boy, whose name was withheld because he is a juvenile. He was being held in the Paulding County Youth Detention Center in Dallas, Ga.

Many of Amy's neighbors helped her parents search the area late Monday after they learned she never arrived at her friend's home.

Her body was found in tall weeds about 100 feet outside the Twin Oaks Mobile Home Park, which next to low dense woods. Her bike was found between two abandoned trailers within view of her home.

Children in the trailer park don't typically play where Amy was found, said Bill Vallandingham, 39, a neighbor who helped with the search.

''It's so thick back there,'' he said. ''It's hard to find anybody.''

Amy would have turned 9 on May 5. Neighbors described her as a bright, energetic girl who made friends easily. Her classmates at Central Elementary School were having trouble dealing with her death, said Carroll County Schools spokesman Brian Doss.

Teachers informed students of her death Tuesday morning on a room-by-room basis, and counselors from throughout the school system will be on hand this week to help the children, Doss said.

It is very sad for both the perpetrator and the victim. Obviously something is very wrong with any child that can do something like that. This is downright scary in fact. Hopefully, something can be done for the perpetrator as he is also punished(which is unlikely because of his age). I understand that this is a "contrary" view to many, but, very unfortunately nothing can be done to bring back the poor victim.

evil exists in the world. this murderer will get out before he is 21, and then he will kill again. maybe it sounds cruel, but evil cant be reasoned with, only destroyed. rabid dogs are killed.

Helen, normally I would agree with you, and this boy definitely has problems, but I think we need to wait for the investigation to find out his motive. It may have been an outburst, in the heat of the moment. Not saying that is right, but there is a difference between that and cold-blooded, premeditated murder.

It's just a shame this 12 year old had to strangle an 8 year old girl to death. That don't make sense. What if he did this at age 21 to someone else. Obviously this guy has problems!! It's a shame.

I hope the 12 yr old gets the help he needs. I don't know if once you've killed, you can ever be right in the head, but I certainly hope this child recieves alot of help and isn't given the freedom to ever do this again...we all get really mad, but there is that point we never cross...I can't imagine what drives a child to cross that line?

I completely agree with the comments here, that something horribly has been done to this boy, because your average, normal 12 year old boy does not commit murder. More so on another child! IMHO, there are two victims here - the poor little girl and this boy. I shudder to think what his home life must have been like.

Sad, sad story.

why is that monster a victim? some people are pure evil. why is it always someone elses fault. sorry if i dont assign that puke victim status. i am sure some lawyer will dress him up in court and say what a lousy childhood he had. if everyone that had a lousy childhood brutally butchered an eight year old girl, there would not be many of us left.

I wasn't trying to say he was the victim. I guess I didn't consider all the facts. I don't know all the facts. I don't think he is faultless here, but maybe he just snapped.

like i said, it takes a long time to strangle the life out of someone with your hands. the world would be a better place without him in it.
