Email Ghosts!

#1 Postby Guest » Tue Apr 27, 2004 10:12 am

I tend to have a problem. I have been receiving emails from ME! These have been returned for not being able to be delivered. Seems someone is spamming my domain names for the use of sending emails, some are attched with a virus, or from not so nice websites, or information, if you get my drift.
I do not send emails unless that particular person is expecting to hear from me. I normally do my buisness over the phone, when it's possible.
So, whom ever has decided to create a problem with Barometer Bob, Hurricane Hollow, or USWeatherWatchers, and last but not least, the Barometer Bob Show has another thing coming.
I'm not saying that someone on this forum is responsible, but wanted to inform everyone that if they receive a email from my domains, please send me the IP addresses associated with the ghost spam mail.
I know I have critics, and some people have a grudge against me or my affiliates, but that just means we're doing a good job, and they feel threatened, or worse, they don't want us to succeed!
So please. I wouldn't be mentioning this if it couldn't affect anyone else. If you receive an email from either of my domains, barometerbobshow.com, usweatherwatchers.com, or hurricanehollow.com, please let me know. Spamming is a terrible thing, and someday in the future it will be outlawed!!! Thank you!

I do not keep addresses in my computer, so it can't be sending them out. Plus, I don't have any viruses. Someone is doing a number of things. They are giving my emails and registering at different sites, plus, even possibly someone has created a ghost email to spam the domains.
I just wanted to give everyone a heads up to the situation.
I learned many years ago not to save my email addresses in my computer.

I had that happen to me, but only on Yahoo! accounts...my addys were pirated by people who sent smut using my addys as "proxys", which is why I no longer have anything to do with Yahoo! at all.

That happened to me as well...on AOL...I reported it and changed my password and then it stopped...it's a total invasion, isn't it?

yep received one from barometerbob@yahoo.com, with an attachment.
As I said, I only send emails to people expecting one from me, or IM, or post on the board, or even better, via the phone. So if anyone receives an email, please send me the IP that sent it, or the entire email. Thanks!

Its a shame people have to do this. If they get caught they should be banned from ever owning a computer again.

If the attachment is labeled "your document" or "your letter" or something like that, it could be a virus. I've had a couple of those.

For a short time, I was having the same issues ...

After installing these spyware and adware applications ... voila, it stopped...

We've all had problems with spam, viruses, and other critters wandering through our computers. The ones that are the worst are those you describe where the bug goes in, digs out enough info to SEEM to be up and up....and then the next thing you know everyone you know is getting messages and ill will...and you didn't even know it happened. I have two or three layers of protection on my computer and it still happens now and then.

Good luck...not sure you can pin it on the ill tempers of anyone here...it can happen unknowingly to any of us.

I got an e-mail from someone on Storm2K,
the other day, who never just casually e-mails me,
re:"Your picture". I was suspicious, so,
I scanned it, and, it contained a virus. So, I
deleted my address book. I figure that I had fingers
to write with before a computer, so, I just wrote
down the addresses of my contacts that I e-mail,
the most!

There are several viruses that cause this behavior. If they infect a computer they will randomly select one address for the TO: address and another for the FROM: address. If the email gets rejected by the recepients virus program it will often send an e-mail back to the "From:" address. That's why you're getting those bogus e-mails. At work we get about 30 of these a day.
