Hispanics challenge redistricting

The parade to the courthouse in opposition to the newly enacted congressional redistricting plan continued as two Hispanic civil rights organizations became the latest to bring a legal challenge seeking to have the new map nullified.

The American GI Forum and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund late Tuesday filed a federal lawsuit in Victoria on grounds that the plan pushed through the Legislature by Texas Republicans underrepresents the fast-growing Latino communities in the Metroplex and South Texas.

But unlike two other legal challenges filed this week, the latest lawsuit does not seek to keep in place the current congressional map, which was drawn two years ago by a panel of three federal judges.
