Cool ocean temperature keeps many swimmers on shore

(Undated-AP) -- Not many people are swimming at Virginia Beach these days.

The water temperature at Virginia Beach has been in the 60s. Bruce Buckelew at the Virginia Beach Fishing Pier says it's usually 75 degrees this time of year.

The cold water phenomenon has been registering up and down the East Coast and there seemed to be little rhyme or reason for the patterns.

Scientists say it's not a wandering Gulf Stream, El Nino or runoff from rain.

The big chill is a result of steady southwest winds that have swept all the warm water out to sea. Scientists call the pattern "coastal upwelling" and it happens this time every year.

Such cold spells usually come and go on three-to five-day cycles. But when the wind blows from the same direction for extended periods, it turns the normally slight cooling into mass refrigeration

I can back that because i went for a dip yesterday and it was bone chilling cold, upper 50 and low 60 ocean temps are chilly to the toes, hopefully this SW flow will end and allow warmer water to the shore again

This occurs every year? Apparently off the southeast coast of Virginia and northeast coast of North Carolina...

As I mentioned in this forum, local news reports that the cooler waters off the Florida northeast coast occurs every several years.

The temperature off Daytona Beach, Florida (at least earlier today) was 62ºF, a fall from 66ºF the one to three days. Granted it is quite a bit warmer even twenty-five plus miles out.

I know that the temps off the New Jersey and DelMarVa coasts have been in the 50's about two weeks ago and have rebounded now all the way to the 60's.

The funny thing is that the water was in the 70's during July, which is pretty early in the season for us. Strange weather! :o

We took your warm water. Water temps here were in the mid 70s not too long ago - 10° above normal.

That is why I go swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, water temps are much warmer, in the 80's
