we have what I guess you would call a "minor" problem with black snakes in my back yard... Not a big deal to me.. I dont mind them there just the harmless black snakes.. But the wife is absolutly PETRAFIED of snakes...
We dont have a big prob with them, but we usualy do run across one everytime we mow the back yard.. Is there something we can do to get rid of or just a way to prevent them from coming into the yard... The lot next to us is an undeveloped lost, and its still woods, so i suppose thats where there coming from becuase we are surronded by houses on all other sides... What oh what can we de?? anything???

Well.....Chad,
These snakes are very helpfu;l to your yard and garden, and also, they are not6 poisonous. Snakes being territorial, also keep other snakes out of the yard except occasionally one may sneak in - but it will leave promptly when the king snakes sense the presence.
This means, your wife really doesn't have to worry so much about copperheads, cottonmouths, and rattlesnakes which also inhabit your area.
I have a couple big King snakes and guess what? Haven't seen a one of those bad guys. My friend here in NC, killed 11 rattlesnakes around his house last year.

I don't know a way to keep snakes out of your yard. The woman who lives next to me has cut down almost every tree in her yard (it was a wooded lot), because she is afraid of snakes. Every once in a while she will set the back and side of her property that is against a neighbors wooded yard on fire to "keep the snakes out." I've heard that having cats will scare snakes, but I'm with Johnsam. I like my black snakes. I didn't even realize that NC had rattlesnakes.

Chad, you can put mothballs out around the house, and, it
will keep the snakes away. But, remember, they melt over a
period of a few weeks, due to rain and humidity, and, you'll
have to replace them about that often ...and, the snakes won't
be the only ones to smell them - you folks will, too! You'll
probably want to leave them away from any patio or areas
where you grill out and gather.

Lost my last post.
It is much better to get adjusted to the King Snakes than the others. You may have to have her go to a hypnotherapist. They can get her to accept the Normal snakes and be wary of the bad ones, which sooner or later may show up.
Actually spiders are more dangerous to some - there are a lot of Black Widows and they can make you really hurt, Also there are the "Brown Recluse - or Fiddle Back spiders" - can be deadly. I will try to attach a pic show on that. If you can't get it, send me your email and I will forward it that way.

Chadtm, is your wife more afraid of mice or snakes? Rat snakes eat mostly rodents so they keep mice and rats out of your house. I don't know if there really is a way to keep snakes out of your yard but I have heard that planting a spiny, prickly groundcover around your 'snake free zone' might help.

There are pellets that you can purchase from your local farm and lawn stores. These pellets seem to do a good job keeping snakes away.
This year has been terrible for snakes here. In fact, we just found a copperhead on our sidewalk Wednesday evening after coming in from the music festival. :o
