World's 'oldest dog' dies at 21
The dog who held the record as the world's oldest has died at 21 years old, her owners have said.
Chanel, a wire-haired dachshund, died on Friday aged 147 in "dog years", said owners Denice and Karl Shaughnessy, at her home in suburban New York state.
Guinness World Records officials presented Chanel with a certificate as the world's oldest dog at a birthday party in Manhattan last May.
Chanel was walked daily, her owners said, but also had unhealthy habits.
She enjoyed butter sticks and chocolate - usually feared to be toxic to dogs - Mrs Shaughnessy said.
"She once ate an entire bag of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, and, you see, she lived to be 21, so go figure," Mrs Shaughnessy told Associated Press.
Chanel also liked wearing jumpers, as she was sensitive to the cold, the Shaughnessys said.
Rival
The couple attributed Chanel's longevity not to healthy living but to God.
"Dogs are God's angels sent here to look out for us," Mrs Shaughnessy said.
Mr Shaughnessy had nominated her for the title after noticing there was no record listed in Guinness World Records.
But there are rival contenders for Chanel's title - including Max, a dog in Louisiana whose owner, Janelle Derouen, has submitted documentation to Guinness apparently showing that he is 26.

Here's a list of typical life expectancies for various breeds.
http://www.pets.ca/pettips/tips-46.htm
Irish Wolfhound at 6.2 years is the shortest, followed by bulldogs at 6.7.
Miniature Poodles 14.8 have the longest life expectancies, mongrels are also near the top
Our pit bulls aren't listed, but the closest one is Staffordshire Bull Terrier at 10.0.
Our oldest is about 9 and she's starting to slow down.

Wow I was kinda surprised by the list. Mine are terrier mutts, small breed so they are obviously
not on the list either. But most of the small terriers listed are around 12-13 yrs. My oldest
is 12 but just started acting her age it seems the past few months. Doesn't seem to hear as
well and harder time jumping on the bed, but darn if she still can't chase a ball like a pup.
21 is a long dog life Chanel is in doggie heaven eating all the butter sticks and chocolate she wants.

i had a dog, she was a mix of a yorkshire terrier/ and some other kind of terrier, so she was a bit larger than a normal yorkshire terrier, she didnt have the best appetite either, she used to eat chocolate bars and nothing ever happened to her at all, it was odd. She lived a long life, dying 1 month shy of her 15th birthday.
But ooo so faithful!
so 21 is certainly long.
