Boy named rail 'director of fun'
A train-mad youngster has landed his dream job as "director of fun" at the National Railway Museum in York.
Six-year-old Sam Pointon from Leicester wrote to the museum and applied to replace retiring director Andrew Scott.
In his application Sam wrote: "I have an electric train track. I am good on my train track. I can control two trains at once."
Bosses were so taken with his enthusiasm they offered him a role as director of fun.
Sam said: "It is the best job in the world. I love it. It is good fun.
"My favourite is the steam engine, I like it when the wheels go round."
Asked what qualified him for the role at the railways museum, he answered: "I've been on loads of trains, including the Eurostar."
His proud mother Lorraine said: "Like any little boy of his age he is train-mad.
"He's very interested in the moving parts and pistons. He can't get enough of them.
"He thinks now he has got this job he won't have to go to school. We had to tell him he still has to go to school."
Mrs Pointon said the family was on holiday when her husband noticed an advert in a newspaper announcing the retirement of Mr Scott.
She said: "We started teasing Sam saying it would be his dream job.
"When we got back from holiday he started to write a letter and we ended up posting it.
"The next thing we know we are invited to the museum and Sam is director of fun.
"We were invited back and had a great day at the museum. It was Sam's third trip there, but I think we might be going again soon."
Mr Scott said Sam's letter of application was a delight to read.
He added: "It's always fantastic to see such young children with a real passion for trains, just like I had when I was a boy."
