Mom speaks out after 'cheese' claims son's life

DALLAS, Texas - As the drug known as "cheese" claimed another young life Monday night, fears that were already planted have begun to grow.

Cheese is a combination of heroin and crushed over-the-counter cold medication that has become a threat at many school campuses across Dallas.

The family of Oscar Gutierrez, a 15-year-old Dallas teen who died Sunday after a long struggle with the drug, described the young boy's last days as difficult.

From here on out, officials at Dallas ISD are searching students, their lockers, everywhere within the schools for the "cheese" drug.

I wouldn't be surprised that a few students at Nimitz High School in Irving may have gotten that drug considering 1/2 the students there come from West Dallas.

We just got a bulletin here at work....there's also a "new" crystal meth. It's called "Strawberry Quick!" It's laced with strawberry flavor so when you snort it it doesn't burn so much AND...the dealers are hoping to draw in more "kids" with this meth...kinda like the "Kiddy Beers"!

How does everyone keep buying into these drugs? At least up here it's just Marijuana, pretty tolorated. We used to smoke pot on school property with the school hall monitors(WRDSB Rule Enforcement).

I just don't get how those Dallas kids are doing this.

Schools to fight 'cheese' with drug dogs

First high school searches targeting heroin mix set in March

Drug-sniffing dogs will soon be patrolling Dallas schools as part of the district's efforts to combat a "cheese" heroin epidemic on northwest Dallas campuses.

High schools can expect a visit from the dogs and their handlers beginning in March, said Gary Hodges, the district's deputy police chief.

"I believe it will be of help," Chief Hodges said. "We could check all high schools at least once."

The cheese problem in the Dallas Independent School District prompted an outcry this week among parents and community advocates, who said the district was doing too little, too late.

My best friend recently discovered marijuana and hash about 5 months ago. He did them with me a few times, but I didn't want to do it, so I didn't inhale and I faked being high.

I don't like drugs, but he does. He is now talking about it all the time with me. Everything turns into some high story, or we should buy some. I say no, but he doesn't listen.

Lately, he is pressuring me. He is making me feel like an idiot. He is telling me why I should get high, and he even does it infront of me.

Police nab alleged 'major supplier' of cheese drug

Authorities on Thursday arrested a man thought to be a major heroin supplier to the teens who mix and peddle "cheese," a combination of heroin and Tylenol PM that has killed at least four students.

Authorities say that the $14,000 worth of black tar heroin found inside the apartment and vehicle of Martin Ramirez Laguna, 31, could be used to make about 43,000 hits of cheese. At $2 each, that's could yield about $90,000 on the street.

Although authorities found no cheese or Tylenol PM in Mr. Laguna's apartment, they believe they have broken one link in the cheese supply chain – which originates in Mexico.

After cousin dies, teen details their overdose on cheese

DALLAS, Texas - While at least four North Texans have lost their lives while on the drug cheese, one teen spoke out after he said he and his cousin overdosed on the drug.

Leonardo Ramirez came close to death's face when he became ill and his 16-year-old cousin fatally overdosed on cheese the teens took together.

Ramirez and his cousin attended schools in South Dallas. In the past, most of the cheese heroin cases were found in North Dallas schools, but authorities said the problem is spreading.

This reminds me of those teens who died of heroin overdose in Plano in the late 1990s. Also, there were strings of teen suicides in 1983, which brought the attention of teen depression and drug abuse. Substance abuse is serious stuff.

DISD 'cheese'-related arrest numbers escalate

DALLAS - While over the last fiscal year, Dallas police made 90 arrests in the school district in relation to the drug called "cheese," during the first five months of this fiscal year, police have already made 122 arrests.

Even with the higher number of arrests, police said they are only catching five to ten percent of "cheese" drug users. They said winning the cheese war won't be easy.

At North Dallas' Thomas Jefferson High School alone, 70 arrests were made over the last 17 months. It seems to be the "Ground Zero" for the heroin-based drug.

I'm just glad I'm not one of those students that gets conned into thinking illegal drugs making one smart and stronger, because the truth is, they don't. Mixing the drugs will do even more harm than good. The only ones I geel sorry for are the parents of those kids.

Teen's death may be linked to 'cheese'

BALCH SPRINGS — Jonathan Medina made the gruesome discovery on his own front porch: His sister's friend, Keridma Godina, sitting upright in a chair.

She was dead.

"I parked my car right there and found her right there in front," Medina said. "I was just terrified; shocked."

Even more shocking was what Balch Springs police learned after they questioned neighbors.

Dennis (azsnowman) has mentioned earlier a "new" crystal meth called "Strawberry Quick", which was cooked up more than a couple months ago. It may not burn as bad (because of the strawberry flavor), but it can kill someone the next day.

A 19-year-old teen has been sentenced to 15 years in a State prison after he was caught last school year with about 40 hits of "cheese" heroin at Dallas area High School.

Does "...Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us..." have any meaning to you at all?

Of course we all have choices but one never really knows for certain what the future has in store for him/her. Sure, it can be argued that the decision is always ours to make but every once in a while there's an unguarded moment when we choose the wrong road.

None of us is perfect.

Teen may be city's first 'cheese' victim

Irving: 16-year-old girl thought to have overdosed Sept. 2

Police are investigating what is thought to be Irving's first fatal "cheese" heroin overdose, the city's mayor said Thursday.

Ana Rojas, a 16-year-old charter high school student, is believed to have fatally overdosed on the drug Sept. 2.

The Dallas County medical examiner's office said toxicology results are pending.
