Bullseye!!
I did something I have never done before in my life today. I went to the pistol range with my son. I have never owned a gun in my life nor is it something that I plan on, but my son bought one for protection after he was robbed at gunpoint last year. It is a Glock 33-357 magnum. We shot about 100 rounds between us. As it turns out I am a better shot than him and he has been to the range several times and at a friends ranch too. I got a bullseye and basically stayed very well within the bounds of being a damn good shot. Part of the reason I went with him is because he has the gun in our house and I did not know how to use it properly. I pray to God I never have to either!!! But I am now much more comfortable with it and its use and that is important.

I would never have a gun in the house with kids here, but I do love to shoot. I was good at archery as a kid and when I got older I used to go to a friends tree farm and we would shoot beer cans off of fence posts. I was a pretty good shot. It was fun too. I can't imagine using one on another human though. Now I have a paint ball gun, mostly I just scare the geese out of the yard. ( no, I don't hit them!) Sometimes I just shoot at the fence, or the trees, when I miss I probably really scare the ducks in the river!!

Well good for you vbhoutex. If you are going to own one, you really should be comfy with it. I think it is cool that you were pretty good with it with no prior experience.
We also have no guns in the house with 3 kids, it is to big of a risk. We had thought about it for protection, but agreed that it is better not to.
The only time I shot a gun was a 12 gauge shot gun, and it was so fun. That thing nearly knock me on the ground. Wow!! I also shot a rifle that day, and was pretty good with that, but it did have a scope on it.
Glad you learned the ropes, so god for bid you need it, at least you know what to do with it.

I have (almost) always had firearms around me...when I married Debi, I came with a few well-chosen pieces.
The FIRST THING I did was to enroll the family in an NRA gun safety course, and follow up with the little ones with the NRA "Eddie Eagle" program.
They knew I had them...where they were, that they were locked, in cases, and NEVER once did they mention their existence to others, look for them, or try to "get at them". Even when some of them fell afoul of the law (another story), my guns did not play any role at all.
A firearm is a tool...it has a "right" way to use it (self-defense, subsistence hunting), and a "wrong" way (anything else). They all learned which was which in MY house, and never deviated from it.

I used an R-4 rifle once... oh boy the recoil on that thing landed me on my butt ( I only weigh 95lbs so it does not take much) wowzers.. my shoulder was nice and sore afterwards too! I did hit the empty can though, how I have no idea but I did.
I am a pretty good shot with a 9mil as well as the 45 hubby had.. that thing weighs a ton.
*tooth pick arms* hehehe.

I have always had a problem with semi-auto pistols...FI, three recoils (1. when the bullet leaves the barrel, 2. when the slide "jacks back" to chamber the next round, and 3. when the chambering is completed, slide forward, hammer cocked).
Add that pistols are not as mechanically reliable as "wheel-guns"; any little thing goes wrong, and it's a trip to the gunsmith's shop.
Give me a Smith & Wesson K-or-L frame any day...especially a 6" bull barrel model, with target hammer, trigger (adjustable) and target (oversize) Goncales Alvo checkered grips.
I might not be able to throw as much lead, BUT...I'll put one in the K-zone ring at 75 yards consistently, and probably before you can clear leather. It only takes ONE round, folks...I learned to make the most of that (NRA Distinguished Expert, Police Combat Revolver/Shotgun).

I was raised around guns. I learned to respect them from the time I could crawl. My dad never had a problem with one of us trying to get into his guns. Locked up and left alone. I learned to shoot at an early age, but I haven't picked up a gun in years and I'd never have them around my kids (personally not as confident as my dad). I'd like to re-learn to shoot. Target shooting was fun, but I know that if I ever had to shoot a person, even if it was in self-defense, it would ruin the rest of my life. We had a friend that was extremely traumatized because a drunk stepped in front of his truck and he struck and killed him. It was immediately ruled an accident but our friend never has been the same. He's gone to therapy and he understands that it wasn't his fault but, no matter how it happened, he can't get over killing another human being. Even though he is doing much better, it changed his life.
