{Terror} Terrorist act on Georgia Tech Campus

#1 Postby BEER980 » Tue Oct 11, 2005 6:14 pm

This is the second terrorist attack on a college campus in a week. Last Saturday OU and now GT.

Atlanta - Three explosive devices found in a courtyard between two Georgia Tech dormitories on the East Campus Monday morning were part of a "terrorist act," an Atlanta police official said. One of the devices exploded, injuring the custodian who found them inside a plastic bag. Two others were detonated by a bomb squad. The custodian suffered ringing to the ears and was treated at a local hospital. The events led to a temporary evacuation Monday morning. "It is a terrorist act at this point and depending on the outcome of the investigation it potentially could become a federal violation as well," said Major C.W. Moss of the Atlanta Police Department.

The custodian found the three devices about 9 a.m. in a plastic-type garbage bag, Moss said. When he picked up the bag, one exploded, as it was designed to do when handled. The explosives were made up of chemicals placed inside plastic bottles and could have seriously injured someone, officials said. Numerous agencies were on the Georgia Tech campus to search for suspects. "It will be a joint investigation between the Atlanta Police Department, the Georgia Tech Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force. Every possible lead will be followed," said Major Moss.

About 100 students were evacuated from the Cloudman and Glenn dormitories, according to school spokeswoman Amelia Gambino

Tragedy in Norman
Apparent suicide bomb kills one outside OU stadium
Posted: Sunday October 2, 2005 12:02AM; Updated: Sunday October 2, 2005 12:03AM

Police cordoned off an area around the George Lynn Cross Hall, Botony, Microbiology building on the OU campus.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- One person was killed in an explosion in a traffic circle about 100 yards from a packed football stadium at the University of Oklahoma on Saturday night in what authorities were calling a suicide.

"We are apparently dealing with an individual suicide, which is under full investigation," OU President David Boren said in a statement.

There were no other reports of injuries. There was no word on the identity or sex of the person who died.

The loud noise of the explosion could be heard clearly inside Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, where 84,000 people were watching the Oklahoma Sooners play Kansas State.

Officers cordoned off an area west of the stadium, known as the South Oval, and nobody was allowed out of the stadium immediately after the blast, which occurred shortly before 8 p.m. People were allowed out of the stadium about 8:30 p.m.

A police bomb squad detonated explosives found at the site of the blast. The detonation could also be heard in the stadium area. The area near the stadium was searched by bomb dogs.

"At no time was anyone in the stadium in danger," Boren said.

Kerry Pettingill, Oklahoma homeland security director, said the incident was under criminal investigation and the motive behind the explosion was not known.

As fans streamed out of the stadium after the game, they were routed around the crime scene. Some fans leaving the stadium were escorted by police to buses that were parked near where the explosion occurred.

The state Medical Examiner's Office was on the scene as was the Norman Police Department, firefighters, the FBI and officials of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

FBI spokesman Gary Johnson said an FBI bomb technician was providing assistance to local police. Emergency vehicles, including fire trucks, surrounded the area.

OU police Sgt. Gary Robinson said the body had not been removed as of late Saturday night as a bomb team continued to check the area for possible explosives before detectives could move in for their investigation.

Jaclyn Hull, an OU freshman, said she was leaving the game shortly before the explosion.

"We saw a little bit of smoke, about as much as you would see coming up from a grill," she said.

Stan Hilton of Tulsa said he heard the explosion while he was watching the game from his seat near the field.

"I became afraid at halftime when they had us locked in the stadium," he said after he left the stadium.

Larry Lucas II, an OU senior, said at the time of the explosion he was in the university's architecture building near where the blast occurred.

"At first I thought it was a prank because that's where the Kansas State buses were parked," he said. Lucas said he saw Kansas State players leave the bus before the game.

Authorities could be seen searching Kansas State players and coaches amid tight security as they boarded buses to leave the area.

Here are some findings that is not making the mainstream media from three different sources.

The first clue was that authorities might have had knowledge beforehand there was a threat to the stadium. Witnesses reported heavy security at the entrance and the office of OU President David Boren put out a press release stating that, “Prior to the game, the entire stadium was swept by the expert bomb teams with the help of dogs.” Since this occurred before the game even started, authorities likely received either a bomb threat or intelligence pointing to one. According to the Northeast Intelligence Network, initial information “suggested that that the so-called ‘suicide-bomber’ was attempting to attach bombs to the buses parked in the area when one of the bombs detonated prematurely.” Witnesses also described seeing a second device being detonated by robot.

That someone would choose to blow himself up as a means of purely committing suicide also seemed suspicious. In fact, far from simply committing suicide, it appears Hinrichs planned to take quite a few innocent civilians with him. Whether or not the targets were bus passengers or the crowds leaving the stadium, the explosives later found at the scene were intended to inflict massive carnage. The Northeast Intelligence Network reports that “the bomb was detonated prematurely when the suspect was either arming a bomb vest or backpack, which contained TATP, a homemade explosive. TATP (triacetone triperoxide) is a very potent but relatively easily manufactured explosive compound that was used in the July London bombings.” TATP was also used by attempted “shoe bomber” Richard Reid to try and blow up an American Airlines flight in 2001.

The possible connection to Islamic terrorism doesn’t end there. Law enforcement sources indicate that Hinrich had a roommate of Pakistani descent who may also have been an OU student. Hinrich’s apartment in the Park View Apartments complex on campus was very close to the Islamic Society of Norman, OK and witnesses now report seeing him visit the center on more than one occasion. According to Oklahoma City’s KWTV-News 9, Zacharias Moussaoui, the so-called 20th hijacker on 9/11, used to attend the same mosque.

Authorities later searched Hinrich’s apartment where they found what’s being described as a “huge cache” of TATP explosives, bomb-making manuals, and a “significant amount” of Jihad literature both in his home and on his computer. Even more damning, KWTV-News 9 reports that Hinrichs tried to buy large quantities of ammonium nitrate (used in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing) from a Norman feed store four days before the bombing.

One doesn’t have to be an intelligence expert to conclude that Hinrichs could have been a convert to Islam who became involved in terrorist activities. Like fellow converts Richard Reid (the shoe bomber), John Walker Lindh (who joined the Taliban in Afghanistan), Kevin James, Levar Haney Washington and Gregory Vernon Patterson (all charged this year in a Los Angeles terrorist plot), his Western lineage would have come in handy for avoiding official scrutiny.

But if Hinrichs was a convert, members of the Triangle Fraternity (consisting of engineers, architects and scientists) to which he belonged were not aware of it. In a message of condolence on the fraternity’s website, members claim to be “as stunned as anyone else on campus.” Hinrich did not live in the fraternity house and considering his profile as a quiet type who mostly kept to himself (much like other Western youths turned terrorists), their lack of awareness is unsurprising. Further adding to the impression that Hinrichs was a convert, a Colorado Springs Gazette photo posted at the Northeast Intelligence Network website shows him with a beard too similar to those worn by newly observant Muslim men to be a mere coincidence.

7 October 2005; 0400 ET: Found among the items removed from the Park View apartment shared by Joel Henry HINRICHS and Fazal CHEEMA was at least one ticket to the country of Algeria scheduled for a date subsequent to the University bombing. (It is important to note that there are conflicting reports regarding the number of tickets). Also found were a variety of explosive materials and other items that would facilitate this and perhaps other terrorist operations. So was computer equipment and "unique" items of significant monetary and operational value that will be identified later, thus avoiding potentially compromising an ongoing federal investigation.

From the lessons of "Investigations 101" to the experience of the most seasoned investigator, an important rule in performing thorough investigations that lead to those ultimately responsible for orchestrating a crime, or in this case, a terrorist attack, one must "follow the money" trail. It sounds much easier than what it actually is, but it can and must be done, especially in this case. Why? According to confidential sources close to this investigation, preliminary findings suggest that the money trail leads directly to a known and active Islamic terrorist cell that has been in operation in the Norman and Oklahoma City, OK area for at least the last 10-15 years, preceding and tangentially involved in the bombing of the Murrah Building on 19 April 1995.

Local and federal agents were carting away what was described as a huge cache of explosives from the apartment of the 21-year-old student who blew himself up outside the stadium where 84,000 watched a Sooners football game...Police were overheard telling residents it would take "several trips and could take up to 24 hours" to remove it all, according to the Daily Oklahoman. A canister trailer used for detonating or transporting potentially explosive material was being used to haul items away.

This is a crazy fraternity stunt, not terrorism. I love how people are so scared they're trying to blow everything up into "terrorism".

gtalum Sorry I did not realize that "crazy fraternity stunts" now included explosives. The police in Atlanta stated several times in the article it was a terrorist act so I have to go with that until they change it. It is so hard to tell who is lieing to us any more. From Bush right on down to the police the lies just keep flowing.
Brent do think the OU was some kind of attention event as well or was it terror related?

Now that... I'm not sure. Probably some isolated terror incident(if "they" really wanted to kill people they would have done it elsewhere).

The police are basically saying they're considering it "terrorism" until they can rule it out. It's called "cover your butt".

Trust me, fraternity pranks have involved "explosives" for a long time. I put "explosives" in quotes because they explained in your linked story that the bombs were simple chemical-reaction bombs. I'm willing to bet they were 2-liter bottles filled partially with muriatic acid (available at any pool supply store) and rolled up aluminum foil. It makes a nice little explosion that doesn't cause any damage, but it leaves a nasty cloud of hydrochloric acid droplets in the air for a short time. Notice the janitor's only injury was temporary ringing in his ears. Not exactly the stuff of terror.

On the OU issue, I have no idea. On the surface, it seems a bit more sinister.

And for what it's worth, my Freshman and Sophomore years I lived in Towers Dorm, right across the quad from Glenn Dorm. :D
