My husband Lee and I spent over a month in 2003 trying to do the same thing you are.
Where to retire?
We drove from our home in Maryland to California. Then we hit I-10. We stopped in New Orleans, Dauphine Island, Gulf Shores and just about every exit we could find. We continued this from the gulf coast into Georgia. We bypassed Florida. Too many people. Then we went up through Georgia on highway 17. Again we hit every town. Then SC, NC and back to our house on the Bay.
We were disappointed on our search, we wanted a small, quiet community with white picket fences.
Sitting at our computers watching the snow fall I happened to find an island named Vieques. The next day my husband was on a plane and 4 days later we owned a home and over a month later we were here. Full time.
I guess what I am suggesting is there is no limit that you should consider.
We enjoyed St Mary's but once you left the quite downtown area you were once more in the traffic/burbs and I-95.
Enjoy your search and if you have any questions about relocating to the Caribbean, please let us know.
