Plane Crash in Indonesia kills at least 145 people

With all these plane crashes, I'm beginning to wonder if air travel is the safest mode of transportation.

This is turning out to be a very sad Labor Day weekend for many.

With all these plane crashes, I'm beginning to wonder if air travel is the safest mode of transportation.

It is...and most likely always will be.

How many jet airliners have crashed in the US this year? None.

How about last year? None.

How about the year before that? None.

How about the year before that? None.

We are coming up on 4 years without a fatal pax jet airliner accident in the US, and safety is constantly improving.

A lot of it has to do with the airline... when flying overseas, avoid airlines you've never heard of. British Airways, Air France, Japan Airlines, Air China, Korean Air, Singapore Air, Qantas, El Al, Air New Zealand all have near perfect records like the U.S. carriers. The large majority of crashes are from lesser-known airlines.

Flying WILL always be safer. At this very second, millions of people are in the air, and will almost certainly safely reach their destination. 175 people out of millions is a VERY small number.

I'm flying to California wed morning and I'm getting nervous now. Too many crashes and I've never flown before. But I do realize how many planes are in the air right now and taking off. I work at the Pittsburgh International Airport and I sometimes sit there and watch the planes take off. Thats alot comapred to the ones that crash. Tons of car crashes a day in Pittsburgh alone.

Nothing to be nervous about. I remember my first time flying... it ends up being strange. You've never been at 35,000 feet above the Earth before. Hopefully the skies will be clear of clouds, because the view is awesome. I could see cars on the interstate and they were just crawling along. (Not really, that's the impression you get when your going 400 mph and they are going 70 mph).

To be honest, what really scares me about this... The news completely didn't mention it. They're still focused on Katrina. TOO focused on Katrina to mention 145 people dying in another country. =/

True...but when one thinks of the magnitude of the Katrina catastrophe...1,000+ perished, etc. It's only natural for USA media outlets to keep focus on this situation.

Actually I did hear it mentioned a couple of times... obviously if this happened in the U.S. it would get a lot more coverage. Nothing out of the ordinary.
