Need ideas for Napoleon Dynamite Party

#1 Postby chicagopizza » Wed Aug 24, 2005 6:01 am

Hi! I haven't posted in a while, but I hope those who have seen the movie can help. My husband & I are throwing a Napoleon Dynamite party- adults-including his boss who loves the movie! {embarrassed :)} We are big fans. We have activities planned (from the movie)- dance-off, football throwing contest, best costume, etc., but I'm stuck on what to serve. We want to serve food from the movie for 25 people.

You never know with weather, so I want to stay away from grilling hot dogs or hamburgers. Our budget does not allow for steak. Tater tots are planned (big in the movie), but most of the food in the movie is what may be considered non-adult: pb&j, corn dogs, egg sandwiches. I'm worried people will hate the menu. Since the llama eats ham & casseroles, I thought about a casserole or ham sandwiches. Any ideas for the party would be welcome even if they're not food related! Thanks for the help!!! :)

My daughter proudly hung 2 new posters, still in shrink wrap, in her new college dorm this past Sunday - one of Flogging Molly (Irish Band) and the other of Nappie (what my kids have nicknamed him), aka Napoleon Dynamite. My daughters love this movie and I'm almost certain my now college Freshmen has taken this movie with her!!!

Just thought I'd share that....she keeps saying we need to watch it. I do usually enjoy their movies (Dazed & Confused, Empire Records, etc.).

Gosh. That is going to be a sweet party.

Other ideas:

- Liger-drawing contest
- Too bad about the steak budget, because you could have had a steak-throwing-at-people-riding-on-bicycles contest (maybe find a good substitute?)
- Hand out those boondoggle keychain things Deb made, as party favors
- Got a...ah, hell, what do you call it, the pole with the ball attached on a chain...got one handy?
- Make your own ND t-shirt station (just buy super-cheap T's and some markers) "Vote for Pedro" "I caught you a delicious bass" etc.

Food:

That's a little tougher. At least have a cake with "Pedro Loves Summer" on it :) Ham sandwiches sound like a good addition, maybe with some slightly more gourmet condiments than just the standard mustard handy.

Good luck! Let us know how it turns out.

How about nachos and quesadillas?? "Fix yourself a dang quesadilla Napoleon".

If you are having contests you can give out chapstick for prizes?? That would be funny. Okay, yes, I too am a lover of the Dynamite.

Also maybe set up a tether ball set up.

There are a few suggestions.

Thanks for the quick responses! They are all great ideas! Sweet! :)
Miss Mary, you should watch the movie - the llama alone makes it worthwhile!

Hurrykane, I'm making the "Presidente Pedro" cake, but I need two, so I could do the Pedro loves Summer cake, too! Steak throwing would be funny! We've looked for a tetherball set -can't find one, but we are still searching! We already have a pinata in the shape of a llama just in case. The t-shirt thing and the fancy condiments are great ideas.

HurricaneGirl - Hi neighbor! You are only 2 hours away :)

Kelarie- Good idea for food and I'll add chapsticks to our prizes! One prize is drawing materials and another is an official t-shirt. We're also giving $6.00 in change (the chicken scene) for one of the contests. Haven't decided which - either the milk tasting contest - different flavors of milk- or the costume contest.

We have a hardwood floor in the living room, so we're putting up blue and white streamers and tinfoil stars to recreate "the dance". My husband is taking pictures of people to make "Preston High" id tags for them. :) Can you tell how geeky we are? hahaha

Again, thank you and I will continue to be open to suggestions if you all feel like responding. :)

A thought if you do the t-shirt thing--if you're using sharpies or permanent marker, maybe have a few pieces of cardboard handy to put inside the shirts while people draw on them so the marker won't get on anything else.

I'm totally going to steal this party theme from you, btw :)

We have had this movie since it came out, and I have yet to watch it LOL - maybe this weekend, after all of the recommendations (and seeing adults like it enough to use as a party theme)

Tots and DEFINITELY make some "dang-on case-uh-dillas". They're cheap and relatively easy. If you dress up like Deb you have to tease and/or crimp your hair and put it into a side ponytail. OMG, sounds like such a fun party!!

You should definately serve some ham and tots, dang case a dillas, egg sandwiches, hard boiled eggs, and OJ. What else?? What would you do in a situation like that?

thanks for the ideas. Maybe we could catch some "delicious bass" for the party! I feel as though I have "gained the wisdom of a man (woman)" through this question! Thanks again!
