Question about the Model updates

can models update themselves whenever they please, or only every 6 hours?
Models update 4x/day...with initial data from 0z, 6z, 12z and 18z--not randomly, and as far as I know, the models we talk about here do not update between those times.
There are models that are run more frequently (like the RUC--Rapid Update Cycle) model, but we don't talk about them so often on this board.
