Houston to get $40 million for hurricane relief

#1 Postby TexasStooge » Thu Mar 23, 2006 6:46 pm

WASHINGTON (DallasNews.com/AP) – Emergency officials granted $40 million to Houston to reimburse the city for temporary housing costs for Hurricane Katrina, Texas' U.S. senators said Thursday.

The money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency is for rental housing costs through the end of the month that had not been previously claimed for evacuees. Katrina hit the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29.

In addition, officials granted Hardin County $3.25 million for debris removal costs incurred by Hurricane Rita, which hit the Texas coast Sept. 24.

The grants were announced by Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn, both Texas Republicans.

Texas has been granted at least $534 million in FEMA public assistance grants – to cover costs of repairs or recovery from hurricanes Katrina and Rita that benefit the public.

The agency also has provided $739.2 million in reimbursements to individuals and small businesses, which receive loans.
