Agree, very likely that the final numbers will be much higher. Here some links to pics about the damages in the Dominican Republic:

or those pix posted in a forum on http://www.DR1.com (hope it's not against the rules to post links to this pix here):

There are also various videos on youtube like:

I'm at the north coast of the Dominican Republic, wet, cold and still rainy, but all ok here, the rest of the country is suffering, specially inland and the south.

Emergency Operations Center (COE) tells of at least 41 dead, 20 missing, over 50,000 evacuated and over 14,500 people in refugee centers, 39 communities cut off by flood waters, and 12,636 houses affected by the flooding. The COE is maintaining a Red Alert for most of the Dominican territory.

Here's a good recent article from the Miami Herald.

http://www.miamiherald.com/574/story/290549.html

"Airport officials said the wind could affect operations at Miami International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and passengers should check on their flights before leaving home.

If sustained crosswinds exceed 35 mph, airlines may delay or cancel flights, according to Greg Chin, a spokesman at MIA, depending on the duration of the winds. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood will slow or suspend shuttle bus service if winds hit 39 mph.

By early Wednesday afternoon, 33 flights were canceled between the Bahamas and MIA, Chin said. At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, 18 flights were canceled to and from the Bahamas and Jamaica, according to spokesman Greg Meyer."

I hope I'm wrong, but this seems like the typical storm where the full impact is not known until after several weeks have passed, and it might be even worse than it seems now. :(

Would you expect any better news out of Hispaniola? They made thier own bed, they've got to sleep in it. The governments of both Haiti and the Dominican Republic care little about the impoverished populous. They give the above mentioned no warnings of impending situations of the sort. They are viewed as a nuisance, so the less of them, the better in thier opinion. There is no regulation on the deforestation for charcoal, hence the never ending problems with any minor TC and it's associated precipitation causing havoc. Yeh, I feel sorry for the unknowing, but I would not send a dime over there for relief help, realizing it would most likely fall into the wrong hands.

Their economy has nothing except natural resources, so that is how they make do. I guess they should change so they have no money at all.

The fact is that the terrain is mountainous and in the middle of the hurricane belt. Storms that sit on top of it for days and days are going to be disastrous.

A friend of mine is reporting to me that the Intracoastal, at least in his area, which is east of Fort Laurdadale, is on the verge of flooding. I dont know of this is true, or if he is stretching out the situation, but if it is true, tommorow should flood it.

Sadly, an increasing number of wealthy individuals here in South Florida (including a few I know personally) are now regularly visiting the Dominican Republic's expensive resorts (of course many that work in these palaces live in tin shacks on the other side of town, but, we're not supposed to mention that).

So, while these resorts are well-protected against bad weather, the tin shack communities are often washed away...

56 now dead in the DR and they have not yet had access to many communities, so the number may be far greater

This may turn out to be the second most tragic event in the Dominican Republic since David in 1979,when around 1,500 people died.

The news coming out of the DR continues to be quite tragic.

It makes what is going on in the Bahamas seem like a walk in the park.

Update from Hopetown, Elbow Cay, Abacos:

01 November / 1130 EDT
Wind 28 knots from east. Heavy rain showers. Barometer 29.50 and falling.
It appears as if the drill tower on the abandoned vessel off Johnny's Cay is down. There has been a further report that the same vessel has now broken in two but poor visibility makes confirmation difficult.

That's ~994 mb. It looks like the center is near the southern portion of Great Abaco Island. Attendant pressure falls should take place as ET transition commences. Terry, do you have a link to these updates?
