A WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 PM EDT THIS AFTERNOON.
TROPICAL STORM NOEL IS FORECAST TO MOVE ACROSS THE NORTHWEST
BAHAMAS THURSDAY MORNING AND THEN MOVE NORTHEAST TOWARDS OPEN
WATER LATE ON THURSDAY. DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE FORECAST TRACK
MAINTAINS TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS WELL OFFSHORE THE SOUTHEAST
FLORIDA COAST...THE COMBINATION OF NOEL WITH HIGH PRESSURE ACROSS
THE SOUTHEAST UNITED STATES WILL RESULT IN STRONG PRESSURE
GRADIENT THAT WILL CONTINUE TO RESULT IN WINDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH
WITH GUSTS IN EXCESS OF 40 MPH POSSIBLE THROUGH THE DAY TODAY.
DESPITE THE PROXIMITY OF NOEL TO THE AREA WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND
THURSDAY MORNING...THE PRESSURE GRADIENT ACROSS THE AREA SHOULD
WEAKEN SOMEWHAT BY THEN AND THEREFORE THE WIND ADVISORY CONTINUES
INTO EFFECT THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON ONLY AT THIS TIME. IF THE
PRESSURE GRADIENT WEAKENS SLOWER THAN FORECAST...THE ADVISORY
COULD BE EXTENDED INTO TONIGHT LATER TODAY. ALSO...ANY CHANGE IN
THE FORECAST TRACK OR INTENSITY OF NOEL COULD PROMPT UPGRADING OR
REPLACING THE ADVISORY WITH A TROPICAL STORM WARNING LATER TODAY
OR TONIGHT SO RESIDENTS ACROSS THE AREA ARE ADVISED TO MONITOR
LATEST STATEMENTS FOR UPDATES AND REMAIN ON THE ALERT.A WIND ADVISORY MEANS THAT WINDS OF 25 TO 40 MPH ARE EXPECTED
WITH HIGHER GUSTS POSSIBLE. WINDS THIS STRONG CAN MAKE DRIVING
DIFFICULT...ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH PROFILE VEHICLES. USE EXTRA
CAUTION.

Seems like some things in S FL will be getting cancelled. NBC 6 just said that Homestead is cancelling its Boo Bash. You can check their website, NBC6.net, for other updates....

Probably should post this here too from NWS in Miami.
Statement as of 12:42 PM EDT on October 31, 2007
... South Floridians should monitor the latest on Noel...
Tropical Storm Noel has emerged off the north central coast of Cuba
today... and data from hurricane hunter aircraft late this morning
indicate that Noel has strengthened. Maximum sustained winds are now
near 50 mph with higher gusts. Noel was moving in a general north to
northwest direction at 8 mph. The aircraft data also indicated
tropical storm force increasing slightly in the northwest quadrant.
Noel is forecast to move on a general northerly track today and
tonight... with additional strengthening expected.
If the trend of increasing winds in the northwest quadrant of the
storm continues this afternoon... portions of Southeast Florida
would possibly be closer to the winds associated with the inner
circulation of Noel tonight and early Thursday. As a result... a
Tropical Storm Warning may be needed for parts of Southeast Florida
later this afternoon or evening.
The strong winds of the past two days across South Florida have been
associated with the pressure difference... or gradient... between a
strong high pressure over the mid Atlantic states and Tropical
Storm Noel to the south. The winds are expected to decrease over
South Florida this evening as the high weakens. Nevertheless... the
potential exists for another increase in winds later tonight or
early Thursday as the winds directly associated with Noel approach
Southeast Florida.
Due to the complicated nature of the situation... all persons in
Southeast Florida are urged to stay abreast of the latest
advisories and statements from the National Hurricane Center and the
Miami weather forecast office... and heed the advice of local
officials if tropical storm warnings are issued later this
afternoon or evening.
Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio and other local media for further
details or updates.

Re: NOEL:Threat Areas : Greater Antilles,Bahamas,South Florida
I think they're just erring on the side of caution. Better to cancel and keep everyone safe than have people (little ones) out and about in potentially dangerous conditions. For regular neighborhood t-o-ting, you can check conditions right up to the last minute, but for planned events, the idea of going or cancelling has to be made in advance to get the word out to everyone....I agree we've had worse with some summer t-storms, but things are probably going to be worse later in the day.

A report from Nassau in the Bahamas.
From stormcarib.com
More from Nassau

This morning it was pretty cool and windy. The expected rain has'nt started as yet but the skies have been pretty overcast. Most schools have been closed and some businesses have shuttered up and or placed sandbags. Its now 4:30pm and its very windy outside and the rain had been a heavy drizzle. Just looked out and you can see so me trees showing the effects of the winds.
Some of the folks I've spoken to have secured their boats and planes as the are'nt taking any chances. I'm going to take a drive up the eastern coast road to check out the wave action to see how bad it looks. They have forecasted the eye of Noel to be at its closest point to us round about 1:00am tomorrow. From the looks of it we're going to be in for a long wet 24 hrs.
