It's getting squally here. Had some brief gusts around 40mph (I'm about 1000ft up). I believe the ship reports. It's always more windy offshore water away from land.

We're in the soup now. The wind woke me up, banging the doors and shutters, with hard rain following. Looking at the radar, this is going to continue for awhile. I'd guess 30-40 mph gusts would be about right.

Good morning, neighbors!

St. Croix did get the brunt of rain overnight, although it looks like the low is now moving west, hugging the south coast of PR, so more rain to come. NHC 2am discussion claims low is at 19N(?) but SJU has it correct in discussion (below), and it's obvious on radar looping. Also, surface map 6z has it drawn on south coast of PR. Note marine section about USCG-relayed ship report and others - that wind up in the Atlantic offshore waters was for real. Wind advisory currently in effect for higher elevations of PR - as well as flash flood watch for the whole area.

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN JUAN PR
529 AM AST FRI OCT 26 2007

.SYNOPSIS...MID OCEANIC TROUGH ALIGNED NE TO SW AND EXTENDS SW TO
JUST NORTH OF THE LOCAL AREA THIS MORNING...AND CONTINUES TO DIG
SW. THIS HAS FORCED THE OLD LINGERING TUTT SEGMENT SW ACROSS THE
LOCAL AREA OVERNIGHT. A RATHER VIGOROUS LLVL LOW EVIDENT IN STLT
IMAGERY HAS ALSO BEEN FORCED WSW OVERNIGHT...AND WAS ACROSS ERN PR
AT 08Z WITH A NE TO SW ALIGNED WIND ENVELOPE. SAN JUAN 88D RADAR
HOWEVER HAS SHOWN THAT CENTER OF THIS LLVL CIRCULATION HAS PASSED
JUST S OF VIEQUES OVERNIGHT AND WAS ALONG THE SE COAST OF PR
MOVING WSW AT 7 KT...BUT LOOKS TO BE MOVING MORE W IN THE PAST
HOUR OR SO.

&&

.DISCUSSION...PRESSURE GRADIENT ACROSS THE REGION AND VIGOROUS
TURNING OF LLVL LOW HAS SPREAD STRONG NELY WINDS INTO THE LOCAL
ATLC WATERS OVERNIGHT...AND ACROSS N AND NE HALF OF PR. TJUA
SHOWED VWP WINDS AS HIGH AS 40KT AT 4K FT OVERNIGHT...WITH
SUSTAINED WINDS 20 KT AT TJBQ...AND GUSTS IN THE UPPER 20S
ELSEWHERE. DUE TO INTERACTION OF UPPER LOW AND LLVL CIRC AND
INDUCED VERTICAL SHEAR...DEEPEST CNVTN AND MOST WIDESPREAD WEATHER
IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN ON E AND SE QUADS OF THIS LOW AS IT
CONTINUES TO MOVE W OR WSW TODAY AND TONIGHT. SPEED DIVERGENCE
ALOFT WILL AID IN POTENTIAL FOR CONTINUED MCC DEVELOPMENT ACROSS
THE NE CARIB...INCLUDING LEEWARD AND VIRGIN ISLANDS...WITH BRIEF
BURSTS LIKELY ACROSS E HALF OF PR. HEAVY RAIN POTENTIAL THUS
EXISTS AND HAVE ISSUED A FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR ALL BUT W SECTIONS
OF PR. ST CROIX WAS HIT WITH TRAINING ECHOS IN A SW TO NE ALIGNED
RAINBAND OVERNIGHT...AND LIKELY SAW 2-4 INCH TOTALS IN ABOUT 2
HOURS...AND A FLASH FLOOD WARNING WAS ISSUED.

MODEL GUIDANCE SUGGESTS THAT ABUNDANT TROPICAL MOISTURE WILL
SPREAD W AND NW ACROSS THE LOCAL AREA THROUGH THE WEEKEND...AND
THEN MORE SHALLOW MOISTURE THROUGH TUESDAY...TO MAINTAIN GOOD RAIN
CHANCES. THE COMPLEX UPPER TROUGHING WILL ALSO SHIFT SW AND
REORGANIZE ACROSS THE REGION TO MAINTAIN UNSTABLE CONDITOINS ALOFT.

&&

.AVIATION...SHOWERS WILL CONTINUE TO AFFECT TNCM...TKPK...TJSJ...
TIST AND TISX DURING THE REST OF THE MORNING HOURS. LATER IN THE
MORNING WILL SPREAD TO THE WEST ACROSS TJPS AND EARLY IN THE
AFTERNOON ACROSS TJMZ AND TJBQ. EXPECT MOSTLY MVFR CONDITIONS WITH
THESE SHOWERS...WITH OCCASIONAL VFR CONDITIONS IN BETWEEN SHOWERS.
IN ADDITION...ISOLATED PASSING THUNDERSTORMS MAY RESULT IN BRIEF
IFR CONDITIONS...ESPECIALLY ACROSS TIST...TISX...AND TSJU THROUGH
THE EARLY MORNING HOURS...WITH WIND GUSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THESE
THUNDERSTORMS AS HIGH AS 35 KNOTS. WITH LINGERING MOISTURE AND
INSTABILITY EXPECTED ACROSS THE REGION TODAY...EXPECT CONTINUED
PERIODS OF MVFR CONDITIONS WITH PASSING SHOWERS FOR ALL THE TAF
SITES THROUGH THE AFTERNOON HOURS...WITH DECREASING WINDS LATE
THIS EVENING AND OVERNIGHT.

&&

.MARINE...U.S.C.G. RELAYED A SHIP REPORT NEAR THE N BOUNDARY OF
OUR ATLC WATERS OF 30 KT AND 10 FT SEAS OVERNIGHT...WHILE SHIP
ZCDG8 REPORTED 40 AND 45 KTS WHILE PASSING JUST NORTH OF PR
EARLIER TONIGHT...WITH THOSE OBS LIKELY WELL ABOUT THE STANDARD
10M OBS. A 01Z ASCAT PASS SHOWED A BROAD ZONE OF 20-25KT WINDS
ACROSS THE LOCAL ATLC...WITH UPPER 20S NORTH OF THE VIRGIN
ISLANDS. HAVE THUS KEPT ATLC WINDS 24-30 KT THROUGH THIS MORNING
AND SEAS MAXED AT 10 FT. THESE ROUGH AND DANGEROUS SEAS WILL
CONTINUE THROUGHOUT THE DAY BEFORE BEGINNING TO SUBSIDE
TONIGHT...AND THEN BE OVERTAKEN BY LONGER PERIOD NELY SWELL FROM
THE SURFACE REFLECTION OF MID OCEANIC TROF. THIS WILL MAINTAIN HIGH
SEAS ACROSS THE REGIONAL WATERS THROUGH THE BEGINNING OF THE
UPCOMING WEEK. STRONG LLVL FLOW IN NW AND N QUADS OF THIS LOW WILL
BE CAPABLE OF INDUCING GUSTS IN SQUALLS TO 45 KT AND HAVE INCLUDED
THIS IN OVERNIGHT STATEMENTS AND LATEST FORECAST.

&&

.HYDROLOGY...WITH RECENT RAINS PRODUCING SOILS AT OR NEAR
SATURATION ACROSS LARGE AREAS OF THE INTERIOR AND WEST OF PR...
FLASH FLOODING AND MUDSLIDES ARE A GOOD POSSIBILITY TODAY FOR THE
E TWO-THIRDS OF THE ISLAND. THE VIRGIN ISLANDS...CULEBRA AND
VIEQUES... WILL CONTINUE TO BE HIT WITH DEEP CNVTV CELLS TODAY AS
WELL...AND THEY ARE ALSO UNDER THE FLASH FLOOD WATCH. MUDSLIDES
HAVE BEEN REPORTED ACROSS PR THE PAST TWO DAYS. IF HEAVY RAINFALL
CONTINUES TO AFFECT PR THRU SATURDAY...AND THEN IN MORE ISOLATED
AREAS SUN THROUGH TUE...THEN MUDSLIDE...NOT TO MENTION FLASH
FLOODING PROBLEMS COULD PERSIST. IF THESE HIGH TOPPED TSTORM
CLUSTERS OCCURRING OVER THE NE CARIB THIS MORNING SHIFT W AND NW
INTO THE LOCAL ISLANDS...ISOLATED AREAS OF 3-5 INCH RAINS WILL BE
SEEN IN 3-6 HR PERIODS.

Thanks, Karen, I'm fine...big winds around 2:30 a.m. with hard rain, but it is just on and off drizzle right now with the wind down a lot. The sky is covered in layers of grey clouds and we're in a flash flood warning now along with the VI's. St. Croix got slammed; the discussion says they could have gotten up to 4 inches of rain.

You could be finding some very cool stuff on the beach!

EDIT: Oops, this was late (I actually got back to sleep for awhile and forgot my wee hours post). A friend from San Juan reported heavy winds over there too, Luis, and he's only on the second floor of a condo in Condado (I think it's Condado!) that he keeps as closed up as a cave...so they must have been pretty strong.
I don't think we've got a wrong way Lenny, Karen. Just a lot of real weather. I just want to see the full moon tonight, as it is supposed to be visually *bigger* in appearance tonight. It was totally in the clouds last night.

NHC has the low where it is seen on radar loop, from 8am TWD

SMALL UPPER LOW IS N OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS AND PUERTO
RICO COVERING THE FAR NE CARIBBEAN WITH A SURFACE 1005 MB LOW
CENTERED NEAR 18N66W AND GENERATING CLUSTERS OF SCATTERED
SHOWERS/ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS N OF 15N E OF 71W ACROSS THE
LESSER ANTILLES. BROAD LOW AMPLITUDE UPPER LEVEL RIDGE COVERS
THE REMAINDER OF THE CARIBBEAN ANCHORED BY AN UPPER HIGH INLAND
OVER SOUTH AMERICA. UPPER LEVEL DIFFLUENCE AND ABUNDANCE OF
TROPICAL MOISTURE ARE GENERATING WIDELY SCATTERED SHOWERS AND
POSSIBLE ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE CARIBBEAN E OF 75W
OVER THE GREATER ANTILLES.

Our 20min heavy rain has let up now, but don't think our rain squalls are over for the day.

And you kept the power! Wonderful. It is blaring sunshine here right now though totally cloudy as well. The wind has picked up from this morning, nothing huge, actually pretty nice, but I have a feeling rain is heading our way.

I don't know if this is the right thread but now we have 5 people dead because of the rain, indirectly. Rain, velocity and mudslide are mentioned as the factors that caused three fatal cars accidents.

What people from the mainland don't always realize is that even an invest.....it doesn't have to be a tropical storm or anything stronger.. can wreak havoc on our islands and cause such problems.

and there is more coming your way, Luis. This is gonna be a rough night I think.
I hope all the people in PR will be very very careful and take care and be safe.

Jimsot, yes, indeed, Anguilla is the most northern island.
Is it still raining over there?
It's still raining here but lightly.. and a lot of lightning. I hear no thunder though.

Barbara

As of 8:00AM the rain gage says four and a half inches have come down here at Sandy Hill Bay Anguilla most of it since about 4PM yesterday but at least a half inch must had fallen in a really gusty squall that came thru about 7:30AM. I am puppy sitting and they are miserable, can you say damp? A few of my Orela's have fallen over and I will have to fix that after things settle down. I did a quick look at the records on my calendar and October is going to win as the rainiest month with almost 9 inches already.

So sorry to hear about the deaths in PR.

For St. Maarten, the current observations from the Met office at the airport are

TEMP DEW POINT PRESSURE WIND
8 AM (12) Oct 26 77 (25) 71 (22) 29.85 (1011) SE 14 light rain showers

It rained all night here. The ground is saturated. This morning is still dark and dreary with drizzle and then rain squalls sweeping in from time to time. The wind is high also.
It will defintiely NOT be a beach day today.

Hope everyone in PR,Culebra, Vieques, USVI,and BVI are OK.

How sad to hear that news, and it's not over yet. Yes, the rain we so dearly cherish can be a killer when it comes too hard and fast on steep terrain.

Jim, that 4.5 inches is just amazing! See if you can settle the puppies in front of the tv with a video, like "Bethoven", that always calmed my dog during storms!

Some really pretty blue sky is visible beyong the clouds to our north, but overhead is still grey. No rain right now, and the air is COLD (ok, for us in islands, if it drops below 80F, we're cold) from the recently-passed squall.
8am Beef Island: Wind 130degrees at 18kt, 1010.2mb, temp 73.4F, DP 69.8, relative humidity 89%.
8am St. Thomas: Wind 90 degrees @10kt, 1009.1mb, 78.1F, DP 73.9, RH 87%.
8am St. Croix: Wind 100 degrees @17kt, 20kt gusts, 1009.1mb, 78.1F, Dp73.0, RH 85%.

The puppies got a very brief walk in between the rain drops and a nice breakfast and are now Zzzing away while I am tired and cold and typing, LOL! Only been down here for 2 years and yes it sure seems damp and chilly today.

San Juan Observations

:uarrow: :uarrow:

So far today a few passing showers haved been moving thru San Juan. But also the sun has been out for a good part of the morning.Winds haved been blowing pretty good between 18-22 mph sustained with some higher gusts.Pressures haved been rising slowly in the area. The good news here is that what was feared yesterday about a big rain event that would cause massive flooding did not materialized. However, looking eastward, there is that area of convection in the lesser antilles moving little or stationary. What will it do in the next couple of days is not clear,or it dissipates or mantains intact and moves westward? That is why I am continuing to watch it.

I see that the reports from the islands are comming very slow this afternoon, meaning good news as nothing bad is occuring. But keep the observations comming here until all the bad weather is completly gone from our neck of the woods.

The blue skies to the north are getting pretty cloud covered at this point and the winds are gustyl too gusty to have my umbrella up at the cart...bungee cords only can do so much!
Overall, the winds are drying up the collected water quickly, and people I've talked to are enjoying the unusual coolness and winds.
