He wasn't talking about just the city of NOLA but the whole area including all of the surounding parishes like Saint Bernard, Saint Tammmy, ect.

Anyway, I have no idea what the total death toll is going to be, but it's already clear it's going to be horrific.

Jeanne Meserve just said on CNN she expects it to be in the thousands... and she's only been in the New Orleans area(now Baton Rouge).

Is it possible that some were simply pulled back into the ocean when the surge retreated? I hadn't really thought of that aspect of this.

Prior to the storm, the many scientific studies (by the Red Cross, LSU, etc) of a hit on New Orleans estimated that somewhere between 20,000-100,000 would die. (And I don't believe that includes the deaths that will occur after the storm due to stress, disease, suicides, etc)

IMHO, it's most likely to be on the lower side of the estimated figures, and I agree, we'll never truly know. It will likely be a bit higher than the final toll.

The LSU Study based those estimates on many factors that are now starting to show. The toxic soup that is New Orleans will be a huge factor in the amount of fatalities. The Gulf Coast is a completly other matter, as the storm surge, which is quite similar to the devastation we all saw in Indonesia and Thailand left thousands missing, and presumed to be swept out to sea. I only hope that the reports on the Gulf coast, where all the towns and communities before the storm all said that maybe 10-30% of people stayed within blocks of the beach are wrong... if not, well, I don't want to think about it.

Totally agreed. If one would pay some attention to some of the video coming out, one will see apartment buildings, hotels and such FILLED with people, surrounded by water. People who have not been recued yet. If this many are alive in standing buildings and did not evacuate, how many people did not survive???
Also, not to bash the govenor or those who made decisions, but since it did take some time to issue a evac. order, regardless of WHY it took so long, alot of people probably did not take it seriously.
And to expand on this......does anyone realize HOW MANY people in the US have no idea about the destruction in NO??? How many had NO CLUE there was even a hurricane??? Our society has become very self centered and have stopped paying attention to anything except what is in their own little world.

I believe that if you look at the numbers from the Tsunami death toll, even with a warning, if those numbers stayed behind, and if the reports are much like those of vbhoutex's friends, with a massive surge coming very quickly, why would 100k be that unrealistic of a number. It will be a magnitude that no one will fathom I think...sad sad time for America as a whole.

What I'm afraid will happen is when the waters start receding, they're going to find a lot of bodies in all those homes that are almost completely submerged. Elderly people would have a hard time climbing up on the roofs.

Yep... and I have no clue why.

I suspect the same is true all along the coast and the result is going to be that most are dead.
