Extremely well said, Recurve. I also think the article has some ideas equally well worth looking into.

keep the port at New Orleans, and a city of about 100,000 like Galveston. Just do not rebuild a city of 1.5 million

The "city"'s population was about .5 million, the other million were in the metro area, and they're almost all returned with the exception of the 60,000 in St. Bernard--understandably.

I believe those 60,000 are in St Tammany Parish right now.

Wouldn't doubt it at all, Pearl, although we have quite a few of 'em here in Metairie as well. I think y'all also have a lot of N.O. east and Lakeview evacuees as well. The metro population is back up to about 1.2 mil if you don't "add" Tangipahoe like some do...that other 200,000 plus are doubtless those still missing in the New Orleans city limits. I doubt a large number of those will ever return.

Well we have about 150 k right here in Houston and they continue to make their presence known!!!!   :grr: :grr: At the rate they are going they may kill each other off before they can return to NO. I'll never figure out how they all got along before Katrina.

I thought that would eventually happen in New Orleans, but it never did. Just year after year of 250-300+ murders in a relatively small city. Seemingly endless supply of criminals. It sucked.

They didn't... In fact, for a few years there, N.O. was the murder capital of the U.S. - perhaps world. Primarily, though, it was the thugs (many of whom now reside in Houston) killing the thugs.

I guess that's one of the "good" things about being on the MS Coast post-Katrina. Very few transplants - mainly because there's virtually NOWHERE for them to live and/or congregate, not to mention no place for them to sell and peddle their drugs...

No doubt......Seems lately I hear about them all the time causing problems.....

I know how they got along. They relied on the state to pay their way...Texas is not a welfare state to the extreme LA is.

Kinda along the lines of what Ixolib said... I was watching an episode of Cops a little while ago. They were in New Orleans pre-Katrina. Anyway, some guy... presumably a tourist.. was telling the police that he was trying to get to the 9th ward. The cop was like, "Are you crazy, or do you have a death wish?" That kinda sums up the 9th ward... now destroyed.

However, yall in Houston... there is a bright side to this. These people are getting a chance at life in Houston. Better schools, more job opportunities, etc... So, hopefully this will not be a permanent problem for yall. They just had no chance at life here in New Orleans. That's what created our horrible cycle of violence. Hopefully those people, as a group, can realize the opportunity given to them... and most(hopefully) will take advantage.

I pray you are right. Hopefully at least some will take advantage of the oppurtunity given them. It is obvious that some are not and those are the ones we keep hearing about(or from-"gimme, gimme").

ROCK..you don't even know half of it, and I'm not being rude. One of my late Uncle's was a State Representative. A few years back he showed me a picture of the first baby born in N.O. for the New Year. This was the woman's 6th child from the 4th different daddy. They get all these special gifts and things for having the first of the new year. Of course nothing can be done about it because they scream racism.
