Can We End All the Hype and Fear Mongering

#1 Postby Downdraft » Sat Aug 26, 2006 1:15 pm

It's going to be another Katrina! It will be a 4 or a 5 in the Gulf! They don't need another storm there, (who does)? This is a weather board folks. Weather like all science doesn't deal with hearsay and gut feelings. We aren't sniffing the dirt like the guy did in Twister. Every thread someone has to stir up fears or try to make this a Florida storm. Your here to gain information or learn about tropical cyclones NOT try to create panic and alarm. Deal with the science leave out the gut feelings. Let's stop with the "I heard from a guy that knows a guy stuff" and get back to what we should be here for, gaining valuable information upon which people can make INFORMED decisions or the fascination we have for these systems. In one thread today I've read that 1. Tampa doesn't have a plan (pure garbage not true I'm in Emergency Management) 2. This will wipe New Orleans off the map as the knock-out punch (total trash I give the people of New Orleans and all along the Gulf Coast more credit than that) 3. Gas will hit $10.00 a gallon ( it may or may not nothing we can do about that). Deal with the what it is part now and worry about the what it will be part later. For now it's a tropical storm nothing more nothing less.
Nuff said, I think.

May I also add that this is going to be taken seriously by the entire staff here. Some of you may find the doom and gloom appealing, but I assure you, we do not. We have people who rely on Storm2K for valuable information. They do not want to come here and read all that hype. It is getting ridiculous and needs to stop. If it doesn't, you will suffer the consequences.

To those who start a new topic and ask questions... we have a new forum for that. Please submit your questions there and keep them out of TalkinTropics.

We'll have to wait and see what Mother Nature has planned as far as intensity and direction - in the meantime, just prepare and plan calmly.

It's getting really old the people who keep -removed- a Florida hit out of this but things will never change. This happens every storm that could possibly effect the US.

Great post and I so agree. I prefer to keep to the PM's for educated guess and speculation. Maybe some can do the same....

The -removed- is not just Floridians.

Amen!! to putting an end to the hype.

Remember, this storm is not a hurricane YET, it's not even in the Gulf YET, and all of you people that are supposed to be sooo smart  , should know by now how fast and often the forecast and/or tracks can change.

I'm to the point, I just don't want to read or watch(as the news channels are getting just as bad) about this storm until a couple more days. (but, i know I won't be able to resist, lol)

Thank you Lindaloo for the post!

I know people think its -removed-..I usually never give my opinions in fear of reprisal of being called a "witchcaster" and being burned to the S2K stake..people should be here to learn and to input information that is current...but should not be worried about giving personel opinions as well...We all need to relax and not give "Doomsday" opinion BUT never be afriad of our own comments and thoughts...thanks for my 2 cents

Simple, yet, extremely wise.

Best advice I've read most of the day. :)

Most -removed- I see is for Florida or Texas, IMO.

And people are allowed to give their own forecast, and I've seen a lot of people get jumped all over for it.

If everyone is just nice and courteous to each other that would be nice. I'm a moderator on several boards (non-weather board of course) and that's usually what I try to get everyone to do.

And I know people get here to get information, but people also come here because this is there hobby. It's a great source for info, but you should listen to your authorities and local National Weather Service or the National Hurricane Center for your evacuation plans and offical forecasts, IMO. There are pros here, but sometimes this board is taken a bit too seriously.

I don't mean to offend, but that's my opinion. And I can say it. This is just an internet forum, a great one, but that's all it is.

I agree. Saying you know this is heading for downtown New Orleans where mayhem will ensue is ridiculous, but this is an amateur board and people should be able to give opinions without worrying about being labeled.

I live on the East Coast, so I don't worry about giving my opinion too much on those storms, but if a storm is headed toward the East Coast, I sit out the discussion completely because people will assume I'm biased and scream that I'm -removed-.

Personally, I find people who constantly accuse others of -removed- to be the most annoying people on the board.

With all due respect - based on the cone from the 11:00 NHC graphic, it is time to plan - use some forethought and consider the close range possibilities. It has proven that no one moves until a storm is at the doorstep in most cases. I for one had my heart drop to my stomach this morning when I saw the graphic this morning. In the back of my mind, the possibility is always out there, but I thought "not two years in a row".

The hotel situation for anyone living on the gulf coast and planning to evacuate is always a challenge - and the evacuation spots this year STILL have tons of additional people from last year.

I've told my family - make reservations - cancel late next week if necessary - but yes, make plans! If, when and where are all speculation, but be real and be prepared.

Hype on the board needs to be spread to those who don't pay attention. The board members know and are aware of the conditions.

A friend of mine uses this as her signature on another board. I don't know where it comes from, but it fits.

“The thing that a lot of people cannot comprehend is that Mother Nature doesn't have a bullet with your name on it, she has millions of bullets inscribed with 'to whom it may concern”

Trying to keep an even keel is not easy with the large amount of gloom and doom posts. Good to hear the mod's are discusisng this.

Can we end

#20 Postby GoldenTriangle » Sat Aug 26, 2006 4:56 pm

I see very rude comments coming from both sides of this argument. It's nothing the mods can't handle privately without causing embarrassment for any poster.

I think we recognize the experienced weather people on this board and I welcome their opinions such as..the possibility of this storm becoming a cat 4 or cat 5.

If someone wants to wish my area good thoughts that is fine with me.
