Ruin my Respite?

#1 Postby baw_es » Sat Aug 26, 2006 9:00 am

I understand if no one will be able to answer my question this far out, but I have to ask it because I was going to start packing today. I was planning on going on a section hike along the Appalachian Trail up in NC from Sept. 1st to the 8th. After these storms make landfall along the gulf coast they sometimes ride up the east coast dumping lots and lots of rain. With Ernesto potentially making landfall in the gulf around Friday what kind of conditions might I expect? Is my trip a bust? Would weather be more or lest likely to affect my trip if Ernesto makes land fall in TX compared to say AL?

Before anyone says it I know my ability to go backpacking really means little compared to the potential devastation.

Like you say, it's still too far out to say with certainty. If I was in your shoes I would start packing and get everything ready. If the storm hits the northern gulf coast and then affects the area of your trail, then start putting back everything in its place. If not, and your trail isn't affected, then go ahead with your plans for which you were prepared. If you are able to postpone it for later on, maybe it will be a good idea, but remember that we are getting into the heart of the hurricane season, and this season seems to be a late bloomer.

Good luck!!!
