MIAMI -- After 34 years of forecasting, and guiding the nation through the past two hellacious hurricane seasons, Max Mayfield, the most popular director ever of the National Hurricane Center, is calling it quits after this year.
"I'm tired," he said Friday, providing the simple explanation for his leaving. "I'm tired of staying up till midnight, 1 a.m. The last two seasons have taken a toll. It's time to move on."

I wish this were more unexpected...but to be honest I was a bit surprised he came back this season after everything that happened post Katrina. Not that a director job is all science to begin with, but I am sure after Katrina most of what he had to deal with was all of the congressional hearings and red tape and governmental blah.
On top of that, think about how much flack he got for VERY GOOD forecasts for Katrina, Charley in 2004, the "secret" briefings with the Pres, and the GW people marching against him because they think he is somehow involved with a conspiricy.
And of course, officials simply not responding when he told them Katrina was coming.
I think Max has been a tremendous director and an ambassador of the hurricane community.
I would guess Ed Rappaport is the early favorite to replace him, but whomever it is, I hope they continue the spirit of openness, focus and accessibility that Max has fostered in his tenure.

Sure... being young and single... it's no problem. Also, this is a hobbie for you.
However... when weather is a job... and you've done it for DECADES, plus you have a family... and your family starts having families of their own... you get tired.

hehe well u wouldnt get tired because ur still young. I dont know how old Max is but for him its retirement age.
<RICKY>
Yes, he must have gone through something very stressful to retire or just because he is getting to old. 2004 and 2005 must have done it.

I can't say I'm surprised. He seems to be a high-stress type of guy who's really passionate about what he's doing, and the last two years really got to him. He showed genuine concern for the people in the paths of those destructive canes. I'm sorry to see him go but wish him all the best.
