Houston Channel 11 - KHOU - Hurricane Story Tonight @ 10

#1 Postby jasons2k » Thu May 18, 2006 6:23 pm

I heard this on the radio today. Tonight at 10 Dr. Frank is doing a hurricane special. He will talk about Rita and what would happen to your home in 120mph winds.

Edited to 120mph, but I could swear the radio said 125mph...oh well.

I hope they'll put it on the video player later as I can't pick up KHOU over here.

I think they will. They have a good collection of recent stories on their website. I'll keep an eye out for a link and post it if they do.

well the story came and went, but was not very interesting. It pretty much confirmed everything I already knew...homes with hurricane clips and made of stucco/brick do better in storms. The one thing I didn't like though is how they almost encouraged Houstonions to leave in the event of a hurricane (even though they are not in an evacuation zone). I was also hoping for a computer animation of what different wind speeds would do to a typical Houston neighborhood; but they didn't have that either. What they need to do is have a full 30 minute "preparing for hurricane season" special. They did that in central Florida before the 2005 hurricane season and I remember it being very good. Scary to think that it is only 13 days until the 2006 season...

We had a full 30 minute program of hurricane prep and analysis last Sunday evening. It was well done by Channel 10 KLFY in Lafayette. It was most informative, but unfortunately all too familiar and still so fresh in all of our minds from Rita.

I felt the same way when I saw it, nothing special. It was nice to see my Alma Mater, Texas Tech, featured in the story though (they have a highly-praised wind engineering center).

When I lived in Houston before, back in 1998, Dr. Frank did do a 30-minute special with computer scenarios, etc. Maybe they'll do the same again.

PS: For out-of-towners, you can view the story at http://www.khou.com. It's on the home page. I didn't post the link b/c you have to register.
