You should consider prior to 1950 in your investigation as well. Here are some statistics for FL
Check out Noaa's website also for some general climatalogy (not FL specific)
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/pastprofile.shtml
Statistics for FL peninsula (does not include panhandle). Please take note how lucky we have been the last 43 years (excluding the 2004 and 2005 seasons).
1921 - 1960 (very active)
-26 hurricanes hit FL
-That equals roughly 1 hurricane appx every other year
-Hit frequency of 65%
-nearly 58% of those hurricanes hit Southeast FL (Fort Pierce to Key West)
-11 major hurricanes
1961 - 2003 (not very active)
-12 hurricanes hit FL
-That equals roughly 1 hurricane appx every 4 years.
-Hit frequency of only 28%
-only 2 major hurricanes (let me repeat, only 2 major)
2004-2005 (extremely active)
-5 hurricanes
-In the past 2 years we have nearly half the total hurricanes for 43 years.
That is scary.

Are we only talking Florida hits here? Just curious?

Okay, 1900-1996, 26 Hurricanes struck Louisiana , 12 of which were major (Cat 3 or higher) status. I would imagine since then you'd have to add about 4 more hits with 2 more majors (Rita and Katrina) bringing the totals to 28 Hurricanes and 14 majors... granted, that's since 1900 and not 1950; but my source is cited below.
http://www.usatoday.com/weather/hurricane/history/louisiana-hurricanes.htm
I'm sure if we added hits to states like Mississippi, Alabama, and that LONG Texas coast, (Not to mention the entire eastern seaboard) it would be a significantly larger number.

Be aware that non-developing depressions are not part of the HURDAT database prior to 1967.

Yeah, that period was active for FL and TX at the same time. So far Florida has gotten much of the brunt of this new active period, but looking at climatology TEXAS IS DUE for a big one! So far Emily and Rita have been our greatest statewide impacts...but really they are nothing compared to what happened years ago. After living through hurricane season 2004 in central Florida...I would hope that Texas does not have to see a similar situation to that this upcoming season...but I fear they may.
Also, another interesting note is that the only other state to recieve 4 direct hurricane landfalls in one season beside Florida is Texas (back in the 1800s).

boca_chris wrote:FL had 26 hits in only 39 years between 1921 and 1960. I coudn't imagine how many hits FL had from 1900 to present but I would bet it is more than all of the other states combined.
You'd only need to look at, and then add, the years from 1900-1920 to the list of some 43 you've cited from 1921 to present. Just approximating that as an overall hit of one per 1.95 years, add about 12 more hurricanes (which is actually a slightly higher rate) using random estimation. bringing the total to an estimated 55 hurricanes in that overall interim. And that is indeed a horrendously high number; but with Louisiana alone having 30 in the same interim (already more than half the 55) and our coast MUCH smaller than that of Texas, which doubtless has had more hits in the same interim, and then still to add Mississippi, Alabama, AND the entire Eastern seaboard, I doubt seriously that it's remotely more than all the other states combined. Still, it gets more than its share of hits hanging out their into the Gulf/Atlantic like a punching bag waiting to be hit.

Don't know if this will help you, Caneflyer; but it is an article on a Statistical Analysis of ENSO events from 1950-1997. Lengthy PDF article if you care to peruse what it contains.
