Accumulated Cyclone Energy or ACE is a measure used by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to express the activity of Atlantic hurricane seasons.
The ACE is calculated by adding the squares of the estimated sustained velocity of every active tropical storm (wind speed 35 knots or higher), at six-hourly intervals. For use as an index a unit of 10^4 kt^2 is assumed.
Therefore, look at TS Jose. At it's first six-hourly point, it was 35kt. The second and third points were 45kt and 35kt respectively.
35^2 + 45^2 + 35^2 = x
1225 + 2025 + 1225 = 4475
ACE = 0.4475 x 10^4
To gather the ACE for an entire year, we take every storm (35kt or greater) and follow the same formula above. In a typical year the total would be near the upper 80s. However, this year we've reached the mid 240s, breaking a record.
