This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

My take is that the Greek Alphabet will be used again by the last decade of this 21rst century but hopefully never an active season like 2005 occurs again. However I know that the debate is on about yes Global warming and the active cycle the Atlantic is going thru since 1995 so it's possible to see the greek ones sooner rather than later.

Luis, I believe that this year may very well do it again. We are at
the peak of an active 20-30 year cycle (Gray, et. al), so my gut feel
is that 2006 will fall between 2004 and 2005, activity wise.

Hopefully David you are completly wrong and that does not occur but we have to look at the reallity of what is going on with the cycle the Atlantic is going thru now.Personnally I see a 2006 season with less names storms than 2005 but much more active than what is an average season which is 10 names storms.

maybe its time we disregard the idea of an average season having just 10 storms.

Since 1995, the mean has been closer to 14. Maybe this is what we should consider to be an average season in this active cycle

Yes, 10 is the "long term" average, but for the cycles, I agree, that
number should be 14 or 15.

Unfortunately I think we'll use Alpha again in 2006. I hope I'm wrong though. where's an El-Nino when we need one (or five)?

I honestly haven't the slightest clue to when we will use the Greek alphabet once again. So I guessed for the near future. 2006-2020

I doubt it will be 2021-2040 as we should be back in a calmer period of tropical activity. My money is on the near term (2006-2020). I think the next few years will each feature 15+ storms, but one of those seasons could see 21+ which would bring us back to the greek alphebet. It really is not the number of storms that makes a season amazing, but it is the number that makes landfall. A season with 7 storms that all make landfall is much worse than a season with 22 storms and only 1 landfall. I can't even imagine a 1 landfall season anymore...I have gotten so used to multiple landfall seasons.

I was expecting this poll to be much more short-term, like with the farthest out choice being "2020 and beyond". (This means I am almost certain it will be used again before 2020.) At this point, I think it is very likely that the Greek Alphabet (or whatever alternate list they develop) will be used at least twice more in the next twenty years. We're in for nasty weather, folks, and I think it's time we get used to it.

I understand what you are saying but I wanted to have a more bigger poll to have a more diverse voting however as I see almost all the votes are for the first option.

2091-2100 isn't represented.

I would have made the choices something like 2006, 2007, 2008-2010, 2011-2020, 2021-2040, 2041-2060, 2061-2080, 2081-2100, and 2100 & beyond.

2006 is already using it!! Just kidding!

Nevertheless, I think we will see the Greek Alphabet once again before this period of high activity ends!

Curious does that mean they're going to another system besides the greek alphabet for storms in excess of 21?

Well there was someone on here saying they were considering a 7th list for backup. Don't know if there was much truth to it though.

That was the plan. I haven't heard anything since November though.
