QBO in west phase for 2006

#1 Postby Ivanhater » Sun Jan 01, 2006 2:45 pm

thought this was interesting...

2) The stratospheric quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), an oscillation in the stratosphere that creates alternating westerly and easterly winds there, is expected to be in it west phase during the hurricane season of 2006. The west phase of the QBO has been shown to provide favorable conditions for development of tropical cyclones in the deep tropics.

QBO is no longer used by NOAA in seasonal prediction due to results presented in a RSMAS trop met class project by Mrs. Kelly Esslinger. The relationship after Gray's paper broke down and there was no physical reason as to why QBO enhances Atlantic intensity. In fact, seasons like 1996 had 6 major hurricanes in an east phase

You have to remember the AMO flipped around 1995 and this may have been why the Western QBO relationship became less important. Gray's research was done prior to the changeover. I even spoke about this in my AMO discussion a while back.
