Tropical Storm in the Gulf next week???

#1 Postby Donwx » Mon Dec 26, 2005 3:02 pm

I've notice that the GFS has been cosistent on forming a strong Low with 2 Isobars around it in the Gulf. Now im not sure if this is a tropical or subtropical system. Or if this is a strong Low. But no matter what it is if this verifies the souther states( Texas,Louisiana,Mississippi,Alabama,Georgia, and Florida could see a MAJOR flooding problem. Note: The GFS wants to stall the system in the North central Gulf.

Don't count on it. Maybe baroclinic. Severe T'Storms for the Gulf Coast.

I would think it would be more of a heavy rain/severe weather event for the Deep South... don't think anything tropical would come of it.

It's 252 hours out, the low is nontropical, sea surface temperatures are less than 80 degrees etc. Simpy put, the answer is nope.

Ahh, look at the model times. That would be the fifth of January, two double-oh six. No longer our dreaded 05 season. Maybe an early season for next year?

Actually the '05 season ended November 30. IF and only IF a new storm forms after that, it starts with the '06 names.

Why aren't any of the state discussions picking up on this system. I think the GFS is out to lunch.

Not true, Although the season runs from June 1 - November 30, the naming scheme is for the entire year.. ie: If a storm develops tomorrow, we would continue using the greek alphabet, and if that storm remained a storm into 2006, it would keep the Greek name.. Now, if that storm were to form into a Tropical Storm on Jan 1, 2006, it would become the "A" storm in the 2006 name list. So you're incorrect in what name would be used for a Tropical Cyclone developing in 2005, regardless of rather or not it is in 'season' or not.

That is correct... the season isn't technically over until 00Z Jan. 1st. (7pm EST Dec 31st)

If that was the case, then 2003's Tropical Storm Odette (formed December 4th) would have been named Alex and 2003's Tropical Storm Peter (formed December 7th) would have been named Bonnie.

I'll second that!! I thought the size was supposed to be limited to a certain maximum????? As in:

Displays a small graphic image below your details in posts. Only one image can be displayed at a time, its width can be no greater than 140 pixels, the height no greater than 115 pixels, and the file size no more than 4 KB.
