Just seeing that 80,000 number next to Katrina is so scary. 80,000 seems like a lot, but then you realize that is in MILLIONS of dollars. Man.

Interesting that Ophelia caused almost as much damage as Dennis.

It also says that Wilma caused around $14,000,000,000 in damage.

If those damage numbers are correct...

Katrina is the most costliest hurricane
Wilma is #5
Rita #6
Dennis #18
Ophelia #19
(unadjusted figures)

Not surprised. That's just insanity. I mean, 80,000,000,000 dollars? You could feed the entire continent of Africa for 15 years with that amount. [Just a guess, but the point is, it's a heck of a lot...]

those are total damage numbers

Wilma's may yet be increased since it occurred only about a month ago, and it takes a few months to tally the total figures. It may end up being the 3rd most destructive hurricane ever when all is said and done

I don't believe its total damages... The NHC report for Dennis had that figure just for insured damages.

IN CONTRAST...BASED ON THE AVERAGE FOR THE LAST 40 YEARS...IN AN
AVERAGE SEASON THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN 11 NAMED STORMS...6 HURRICANES
...AND 2 MAJOR HURRICANES.

THESE NUMBERS COULD CHANGE...AS CINDY MAY BE UPGRADED TO A HURRICANE
AT LANDFALL IN LOUISIANA...AND EMILY MAY HAVE BRIEFLY REACHED
CATEGORY FIVE STRENGTH.

also, based upon that report, do not expect Stan to be retired since the number of direct deaths is only 80-100 (though that is very highly suspect)

Yes, I question whether it will or not, now. But If Cesar and Diana were retired... Stan should be (it should be no matter what).

Diana destroyed 10's of thousands of homes and Cesar devastated Venezuela. Itg was damage that got them retired.

Bret in 1993 killed 176 and Gert that same year killed 76, yet both remain. Since the damage was mainly from the unrelated flooding, my vote would be if 100 is all that Stan killed, then no retirement

Well that would say that it costs about $15-20 to feed a person in Africa for a year. It's probably more like $100. Which means you could feed the entire continent of Africa for a year or two with the financial value equal to the cost of Katrina.

Amazing to think that, in the past 2 years, we have had a total of NINE hurricanes that each have caused more than $1 Billion in damages in the US alone.
(2004's Charley, Frances, Ivan & Jeanne....2005's Dennis, Katrina, Ophelia, Rita and Wilma).

Unbelievable.....

Katrina's total is likely to go up since we haven't assesst the damage to some structure yet.also many of those folks don't have insurance which underestimates the damage

Before 04-05
We had a period of almost unbelievably good luck (almost
miraculous) during many years of this active
cycle...NHC has said so...the troughs of east coast in previous
years sometimes helped save some land areas...but 2004-2005
the lucky streak ended for many on the Gulf Coast, Florida, and
even parts of the East Coast (Ophelia). Now devastating hurricanes
did hit 1995-2003...but luck ran out for many more people in
2004-2005...both record setters for most damage each year...
that is the unfortunate result of heavy coastal construction and
the end of a lucky streak...
