Post your vacation or travel tropical storm experiences

The thread on experiencing an eye of a hurricane got me to thinking: alot of people must be affected by tropical systems in regards to travel plans...with the southeast and east coast beaches, Caribbean islands, Asian islands, Pacific islands, and many other vacation destinations being in tropical zones. Plus, maybe an odd or flukey storm ruined a travel plan, canceled a flight, or caught you while staying at a hotel. Maybe you found yourself in the unusual situation of getting caught in one of the rare New England or northern US hurricanes while traveling.

I myself experienced my first hurricane as a kid in New Jersey, while staying in a cottage beach house on the Jersey shore in 1978...one that brushed the coastline, forced our evacuation to a hotel inland, caused flooding and minor storm surge, and left fish swimming around in our cottage kitchen!

I was also caught in Erin in 1995 while staying at a friend's house in Vero Beach...it was too late to try to break for home, since I wasn't sure if the storm would veer south and catch me on the road, or even head south and hit my hometown 3 hours to the south (it didn't...the eye came right over Vero).

And my mother and father have a wild story from last year, when they were on a transatlantic cruise from Ireland to New York on the Holland America Rotterdam. After calling me from Ireland to ask if their home was OK from hurricane Frances, which had just hit us 2 weeks earlier, and casually joking about how lucky they were to have been on a cruise when the hurricane struck, they sailed across the North Atlantic. Somewhere in the middle, Hurricane Karl caught up with them...the captain thought he could stay on the fringe of the storm leaving it to cross in his wake, but the 45-55 foot seas battered the ship and fuel-starved the engines...which promptly died. The 60,000 ton ship bobbed powerless for 6 hours in 50-foot-plus seas as the Cat 1 Karl passed over them, getting hit broadside from waves, incapable of steering bow-in. Finally, engine power was restored, and the battered ship and passengers crawled back to New York...many passengers bruised and scared. Some shots from onboard:

And if that wasn't enough of an insult...their flight home to Florida from New York was canceled, because Hurricane Jeanne was in the process of passing through South Florida!

So...who else has a travel or vacation experience which was somehow impacted by a tropical storm or hurricane?

In early June my cruise went right into the middle of Tropical Storm Arlene. It was quite an exciting experience especially being on deck and the wind howling. Also the waves were shaking the interior rooms alot, it was difficult to sleep. Im glad I didnt get seasick.

In August of 2001, I went to Florida for 10 days in the beginning of the month. Little did I know that Tropical Storm Barry to our west would cause rain almost every day

From June 2nd to June 12 2005, I was in Cancun, Mexico, and we got some winds and rain there - I kept hearing it was caused by some kind of storm out at sea - Turns out that the storm was Tropical Storm Arlene! I think that's the closest I've ever been to a tropical system like that =P

Arlene got two traveling storm2k'ers...she's got a good record going!

It is rare that you get caught on a cruise ship - I've cruised 21 times, and my mother has cruised 98 times...and her experience last year with Karl was the first time either of us have ever gotten into a tropical system while cruising. Sure...we've played a bit of dodge, with the ships changing itineraries or moving a little faster than normal to avoid a system, but we've never gotten caught in one. Scorpion got unlucky, or lucky depending on how you view that!
