Interstate I-10
What is the situation with I-10 in AL-MS-LA? Is it still closed in some areas with major detours to drive across those states?
I know there was major damage to some of the bridges and wondering on the driving situation.

I-10 is wide open. Just drove from Houston to Mississippi to work on my mother's house a few weeks ago. There is evidence of strong winds in areas, but certainly no problem with the Interstate. In fact, I was a bit surprised at how little evidence of wind damage I saw, particularly north of New Orleans and on the MS coast. No problems getting gas anywhere, either.

I-10 Twin Spans going across Lake Pontchatrain is only open on one bridge. Both bridges were destroyed by Katrina, now they have one that is open for traffic but it is only one lane.
The other one is pretty torn-up it is supposed to open in January.
I'm guess Wxman went I-12, you never went through New Orleans?
I agree that the amount of Tree Damage along the interstates is not that bad, maybe because they cleaned all that up. I really don't know but the tree damage in St. Tammany Parish away from the interstate is nuts. Also, in Hancock County.

I-10 across the Pontchartrain isn't really 'wide-open'--they scavenged from one side of the twinspan to temporarily complete the other and it's only open with one lane in each direction. That thing backs up like Rodney Dangerfield's toilet if you look at it wrong.
And they are constantly running out of gas in Diamondhead, which is the last gas station for about 40 miles on I-10 west until you get to Slidell. Diamondhead also has the highest gas price on the coast (captive audience).

Gas prices on the coast are a whole lot higher than inland. I was just talking to a co-worker and he said gas was near 2.10 near Meridian while here on the coast the cheapest I've noticed is a 2.43. Yep, we are being taken advantage of. I never get gas in Diamondhead. I was higher than average before Katrina.....MGC

If you're traveling across south LA to MS (just passing through) then you don't really take I-10 through New Orleans. You jog north on I-12 for a short period thru Slidell. THAT area is wide open. Just stay away from I-10 in New Orleans, obviously.

all of interstate 10 is open in mississippi until you get to the twin span in New Orleans. most of highway 90 through the beaches are closed. certain parts are open now.

I figured that's the route you took

Boy, if you think $2.43 is high, don't come to South Florida! We've fluctuated between $2.69 and $3.29 over the past month and a half through the hurricane strikes. I just filled up Friday for $2.71...which I considered quite cheap compared to where it was a few weeks ago!
I never would have thought I'd see over $70 to fill a VW Passat...but that's what it cost after Katrina. Now I'm back down to $55-60 per tank.
Back on subject - What is the status of 90 other than Bay St Louis? Is any part of 90 open through Mississippi, or have they closed the entire route? Also, is there access to Pass Christian, or is it limited still to residents only? I intended to visit a friend there the weekend after Thanksgiving and see how they are doing on rebuilding, but I wouldn't want to be denied access or get in the way if the situation is still in restricted mode.
