Question About Classifying vs. Naming Tropical Systems...

I have a question that hopefully isn't looked upon by those more knowledgable as a dumb question....

When you look at any of the Hurricane archive sites (such as UNISYS), we see the dates for the lifespan of any particular storm. Tropical Depression 19 provides a perfect example of something I have always wondered.

The system that ultimately became tropical depression 19 formed in September, even being classified as a tropical depression in that month. However, if the system had survived and became a named tropical storm in October, would this system be tagged in the year-end summaries as a September storm or as an October storm??

Just curious....

It'd be a 'September storm'
...and there's no such thing a stupid question (well actually there is, but that wasn't one... :P 8-) )

Wait, I thought it would be an October storm. Alex last year comes to mind. It formed on July 31st but it didn't become a tropical storm until August, thus an August "storm".

LOL...no stupid questions...only stupid (incorrect *raises hand*) answers. :oops: :lol: :D 8-) :oops:

EDIT: Actually...I think I may have been right the first time, though now I've managed to confuse myself (and probably a few others lol).
SEVEN TROPICAL CYCLONES FORMED DURING AUGUST. IN ADDITION...
ALEX...WHICH FORMED AT THE END OF JULY...REACHED TROPICAL STORM AND
HURRICANE STRENGTH IN AUGUST. THE TOTAL OF EIGHT TROPICAL CYCLONES
REACHING STORM STRENGTH IS A NEW AUGUST RECORD...BREAKING THE
PREVIOUS RECORD OF SEVEN SET IN 1933 AND 1995. THE EIGHT NAMED
STORMS THAT HAVE FORMED SO FAR IN 2004 IS TWICE THE NORMAL NUMBER
OF 4.

As I understand it, you can have all the convection in the world, a strong wave, whatever, but it does't "form" until it becomes a TD with a discernable center and circulation at lower levels.

Like to hear anybody else's input if this is incorrect.
