South Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Okay, as I understand it there is no hurricane season in the South Atlantic, however in March of 2004 Hurricane Catarina a Cat 1 "cane" hit southern Brazil and to my understanding there have been only three tropycal cyclones ever recorded in the South Atlantic. In January of 2004 there was also a tropical Storm that formed off the coast of Brasil. Apparently December through May is the best time for storms to form in the South Atlantic.

Does anyone know more about the South Atlantic, is it considerered a cyclone basin? or are these storms just rare events?

The whole Earth has cyclones.

Cyclone:
An atmospheric closed circulation rotating counter-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

But tropical cyclones are only confined to tropical and subtropical regions, with the exception of the South Atlantic Ocean, and SEastern Pacific Ocean. Water too cold and environment too hostile for tropical cyclone development. It will be foolish to say that the South Atlantic is a hurricane basin since they usually have a TROPICAL cyclone once every decade, more or less.

the SOuth Eastern Pacific gets the occasional Cyclone in el nino years

There were some weak cyclones in the south atlantic ocean bevor 2004, one in may 2001 and one in april 1991. Here is a link to the brasilian hurricane of march 2004:
