Someone say hurricane?
Blame the media! At least I do. I can't tell you how many people this evening told me.... oh the storm is going to Texas.
I had to work this evening. One of the few STUPID restuarants that decided to stay open. Someone mentioned work tomorrow and I said, "Okay ya'll lucky my a$$ came tonight"
We are dealing with a Cat.4 that has all the chance to regain Cat. 5 strength. We have several fast food places open, although I commend Burger King for closing.
Walgreens will remain open tomorrow during the storm.
PEOPLE just don't get it!
I get home and my mom says something along the lines of... just a little wind and some rain.... I'm like... turn off that FOX NEWS crap!
The local weatherman is here saying this will be worse than Lili... and it will give us 20 hours of Tropical Storm worce winds.... last time I checked 20 hours of 65 mph winds can do some damage.... now we're hearing a few hours of Hurricane force winds.
Oh nooooo... I'm not nearly done...
I stop to get a Dax at New Orleans Daquiris and the girl tells me her manager said as long as there is NO MANDATORY evacuation they HAVE to report to work tomorrow at 9 am!
I told those two girls her boss was nuts! I asked them if they were ready to sleep there over Friday Night!
This whole mess is pi$$ing me off. They played up this big a$$ Houston being blown off the map scenario and now we are in danger. We don't have anywhere to go. The hotels / motels are booked everywhere.
I hope I sleep well tonight. I'm sorry guys but I'm extremely pissed at Louisiana once again. Waited way to long to send in evac orders.... and they make people choose between a paycheck (going to work) or losing a damn job.
Pathetic!

So sorry to hear that! I know you must feel so frustrated. Hopefully it won't hit there quite that bad. I had wondered today why La was once again waiting. Good luck crazycajuncane!
Oh! by the way on the cable Fox all day they have talked about the chance of it hitting La and to be prepared. Wish people would check all their local stations if they don't have cable and hopefully hear the truth of what is going on. I agree so many will try to downplay the seriousness sometimes. Very maddening!

Oh yeah don't you just love work some days! 
Crazycajuncane you just make sure you stay safe. I was working in a grocery store years ago that insisted everyone go to the cereal isle in a tornado....yeah like I am going to the middle of a free span building. Ugh idiots. I just walked past everyone huddled with the cereal and hid with the produce guys in a great big walk in cooler. I got written up but I didn't care I thought it was a stupid policy anyway. You obviously have more smarts than many there do whatcha gotta do!

I am worried about all of Acadiana.... Lafayette, Lake Charles, Thibidaux, Morgan City, Rayne, Iowa, Scott. I hope people get it. You are on the right side of a major hurricane and not far enough from the coast.
Ignore morons who say "this is a texas storm." This is a sw LA and TX storm.
I wish I could have been at Festivals Acadiens and the benefit at Grant Street Last week. And I want to be back in la belle Louisiane soon.
You all be very careful and be prepared for a bad storm. I am thinking about you all every minute.

BLAME THE MEDIA!
We had the same problem for Katrina. I am from LaPlace, near the southwestern shore of Lake Pontchatrain. I closely monitor all storms. I teach LA History. My class spent the week before Katrina watching the cone shift back and forth. We were in and out. Friday afternoon, we were barely in the cone. When I got home at 4:30, the center was now at Mississippi / Alabama line. It was the same on the 10:00 news. The next morning, I turned on the tv, and the storm was headed up the middle of the lake. It was not until SATURDAY MORNING that the media reported that we were in danger. It was a last minute evacuation that took most people by surprise. It took till Sunday morning to convince my mom to leave.
The media needs to quit picking the doomsday scenario and warn all along the cone because many do not pay attention until they are the target!

Yeah.... so folks in Louisiana have nothing to worry about. They'll just be in that measly ole right front quadrant and you're right, and since the storm is bound to be at least one, maybe even two miles way beyond the state line, they won't feel a thing.

It's not the media's fault. It's not their job to give you evacuation advice. Thats you local officials and state/federal agencies job. I find it really annoying when people make the mistake of thinking it's CNN's fault some political yahoo they elected to office dropped the ball.
Stop blaming the media , they report the new , they don't give weather forcasts. You want to scream abotu not enough warning , go scream at the NHC for not moving tracks fast enough. You want to scream about delay evac orders or general perception being it's going someplace else , blame your local officals and last blame the common ignorance of your own people who rely on the wrong sources for life or death information.

Our local officials rely on information from the media too! They make decisions based on what they are being told. Granted there are many conference calls and meetings. However, the media picks their spot and sticks to it even when it is very wrong. Reading the local paper, there are many people who had heard Florida all week for Katrina so did not pay attention.
I agree that the NHC often needs to shift tracks instead of hanging on even when so many clearly see what is happening.
My best sources have been sites like this and a local weather site. The weathermen who post give it to us straight before that is the "Official" word being released in the media. I don't know if there is some fear of scaring the public when it is not necessary.
Unfortunately, not all people take the time to really look further than what they are hearing on the local news or the weather channel. They need to a better job of covering the realm of possibilities instead of picking their spot and sticking to it till the window of safe escape is rapidly closing. 48 hours to evacuate New Orleans is not enough time. The media needs to balance the reporting.
We also need to address those companies who hold jobs over the head of their employees when it is clearly not safe for them to be forced to go into work. My husband was called back in early today, but he still had to cross the Causeway in tropical storm force winds. Lives should be the main focus not a day of work.
