Fish

#1 Postby Rain Man » Thu Sep 22, 2005 6:38 pm

I am not sure where to post this so I will put it here and hope I have put it in the right place.

What happens to all the fish in new orleans and in places where there are hurricanes? I ask because some people keep very large dangerous fish in tanks, and if they entered the local eco system they could destroy it. The finest example of this is what happened in lake victoria with the nile perch, it brought the natural cichlid species population down from 300 to 100. What would happen if someones bad fish got into the water in new orleans? There would be a lot and it would be bad. What happens? I dont want that to happen.

I'd be much more concerned about the ecological damage caused by chemical and oil spills, among other things. Any animals a loose fish might damage are probably already dead.

Oh. I didn't want to hear that. Surely some species from tanks will survive though?

I am in the UK. I don't own any piranhas they need 75 gallon tanks and I don't have a 75 gallon tank. They also need lots of live food and I dont like the idea of feeding something something that is alive, unless they are insects because everyone knows insects are bad.

I think they should block the rivers upstream of the disaster areas so that the bad fish can't get into the good fishes place.

I really think you should stop ripping the piss and giving the brits a bad name on here. I can't imagine for one second that your 'humour' is appreciated on here at the moment.

Mind your own business JoJo, if you dont like what is said, keep your comments on the other side of the pond. Is it not tea and crumpet time?

This is actually a potentially huge problem that you guys don't know anything about, but anyways. Its not only fish, but certain types of seaweed, that if let loose where they don't belong, can completely wipe out coral reefs. Snails and other crustaceans too can cause massive problems that effect everyone.

Listen lowbrainers, the fact was raised that anything that escaped, probably died in the contamination. Dont sweat it. We all know about invasive exotic species. It aint happening here, there is a huge death count, and maybe repeated this weekend. Screw the fish and the post.

I apologise Stephanie - just got the feeling from Rain Man's posts over the last couple of days that he/she was making fun of the people who are staring Rita in the face at the moment.

I'm sorry if I was wrong, especially when everyone's quite rightly so stressed at the moment - I didn't mean to inflame reactions.

Sorry everyone :(
