WWL is reporting Nat. Guard dropping sandbags in breech...

#1 Postby therealashe » Tue Aug 30, 2005 10:45 am

I'm listening to the live feed of WWL. They are reporting that there will be many 3000 pound sand bags dropped into the breech in an attempt to stop the flooding.

I hope it works.

I don't think sandbags will work. Too much force..

Yes, now they are discussing that the Emergency Management crew is trying to see if it's even reversible.

East New Orleans Underwater

It's filling up steadily from 17th street canal and the water is now at the edge of the French Quarter.

From the WWL live feed now...

This actually might make the situation worse by allowing pressure to build up on other weak parts of the existing levee.

What other choices do they have, though, to try to stop it? I guess they have to try to do what they think makes sense.

Here in FL official sources tell us sandbags will do no good in a flood surge situation and not to even use them.

Saw that on their breaking news page, too.

11:01 A.M. - Break in 17th Street Canal Levee is now 200 feet wide and slowly flooding the City of New Orleans. Huge sand bags are being airlifted to try to stem the rush of water in that area.
