Satellite indicates possible strengthening. My call is under 900 mb and 180 by daylight.

High tide in the am won't help...adds 1.4 ft to the surge.

This could be the worst hurricane to hit the US. I think its almost a given she will at least return to her strength of earlier today.Maybe 180mph

905mb pressure or less for over 9 hrs, truly history. One last thrust before landfall?

Why would it strengthen that much?

From Jwayne being correct last night, I'm not gonna bet against him. I got a question although. If a eye from a very powerful hurricane contracts a little and gets smaller and tighter; can't the sustained winds in the hurricane increase as well?

The size vs the speed

#10 Postby aumoore » Sun Aug 28, 2005 10:26 pm

IMHO the size of the Cane means as much as the wind speed. I live in Pace, FL and we just went thru Ivan and Dennis.

With Ivan we were on the eastern side and missed a direct hit from the Eye. The winds were at about 131mph and the hurricane force winds lasted for over 10hours. The damage was horrible.

Dennis came thru a few weeks ago and we were actually in the eyewall but it was a small cane with slightly higher winds(around 135). There were trees downed by Dennis that Ivan did not touch but the overall damage was not as great due to the smaller size and short duration.

It may be the trees taken by Ivan were the ones that afforded a wind break that allowed the trees taken by Dennis to remain standing during Ivan. It could be the approach of the winds came in at a slightly different direction. The ground could have been at a different water saturation and, finally, the trees could have been weakend by Ivan.

Very possible Jwayne's prediction could come true with the warm water right before NO.

based on reality, its extemely unlikely.....the storm is not in a "topping out" phase right now, heading the opposite direction, although slowly.
