My house is in a flood zone. I'm exactly at sea level (or at least per the survey done in the 1990's before we sunk a few inches). My house is raised about 4' and my pecan trees, if left standing, go up at least 60 feet.
I haven't seen my neighborhood this deserted or this quiet since Ivan. It was pretty empty for Dennis, but this is odd.

The surge from Katrina is expected to be in the 20 foot range near to and East of the eye. That is 4-6 feet less than it was with Camille. However, Camille was actually smaller in size than Katrina is so the effects will probably extend further East, both wind wise and especially surge wise. I was in Gulf Breeze, FL. for Camille and we had 8-10 feet of surge and winds gusting to 90-100 mph. The winds will probably not be that bad that far East, but the surge closer to the landfall point could easily approach what happened during Camille. Anyone South of I-10 along the MS Coast needs to be PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO LOCAL AUTHORITIES AND THEIR EVACUATION RECOMMENDATIONS AND HEED THEM WITHOUT QUESTION!!!

I'm still at home in Lafitte....... will be departing this locale, maybe forever tomorrow morning. After boarding up this evening, I took a long look around, and a lot of pictures of stuff I expect to be gone, or ruined by the time they let us back. I'm going to visit my folks in Tennessee, might even have to read the classifieds and find a job up there if there is nothing to come home to. I guess I'm about to find out how good all this expensive insurance is.......
