Me too..I know we'll be just fine, but, I'm very sad and disappointed that it is presently predicted to come here. I'm not scared, and I'm not excited at all. I'm pretty down about it coming....

Not to let anyone's guard down, but with the damage photos I saw from Charley's and Ivan's landfalls, I was impressed with how well many strucutres held-up. The lesson I took from what I saw was that if homes and buildings meet hurricane code and are boarded-up properly, then the resultant storm damage will be minimal.
This does not, however, account for storm surge, where Ivan especially yielded very severe results. If you are told to evacuate, then do so - even if your building is to code and will be boarded up. Each tropical cyclone is different in its wind behaviors.

The wind is the least of New Orleans concerns. The structures that withstood
Charley and Ivan would be under water in NOLA.

In New Orleans, even though a building may be up to code, flood waters will be the major concern.

Yes surge is the main concern. If the dikes that protect New Orleans fail, I'm no engineer but it cannot be good for that city. Winds and tornado threat are great enough to structures, but once they are flooded there's a whole new realm of immediate and then after effects. I hope people make it to higher ground, better to be crowded in a building than swept away in the waters.
I'm not one to criticize but if we can do an airlift of supplies to Berlin, supply the Israelis in the Yom Kippur war, and drop off lots of supplies to Chad just a year or so ago... it seems maybe we could get those 100,000 forecast to not be able to evacuate. I'm not knowledgeable about this area, so I won't criticize the plan (it seems very sophisticated already), but it seems like such a great human tragedy is out of place in America with all our technical might.
