The NHC projection seems reasonable. 120-125 knots, medium strength cat. 4.

yah I belive it is DEFINATLY going ot be at least a med strength cat 4 but I think it would be cool if katrina got to cat 5 status but weakend to a boarderline cat 4 or med strength cat 3 before making second landfall

Strenght forecasting is still the toughest thing about hurricanes.Remeber Charlie? Katrina could be anywhere from cat 3 to cat 5,but I thing cat 4 to borderline cat 5

I don't think it can become a cat5 ever. My reasoning is because it is spreading out...It would need pressures below 900 millibars for this thing to get anywhere near cat5. I don't think so.

It seems Katrina dipped South to stay over the overly-warm, Gulf of Mexico as long she possilby could, so she would strengthen. I wouldn't be surprised at all She has a mind of her own.

it going to be an unexplainable weakening, everything is going to be there for katrina to strengthen, but it wont come together. probably cat 3 on the lower end of that at landfall.

Of course, considering she dropped from 984 mb to 940 mb in 24 hours, she needs a break. Not very often are we "endowed" with a hurricane that deepens that impressively.

She still has 48 hours over water, and has yet to hit the loop current. She just received a shock from coming under the influence of a different steering pattern (WNW versus WSW) as induced by an entirely different mechanism (weakness/different high than before). Look for her to restrengthen significantly once she stabilizes that shock.

I wouldn't drop the consideration yet. It's just a little ERC before she bombs again (another 44mbs over next 24 hrs ) I voted borderline 4/5 myself, though.
