13 miles until water for Katrina

#1 Postby dhweather » Thu Aug 25, 2005 10:40 pm

In 2-3 hours, she'll be back over 92 degree water.

I'm afraid what we may wake up to in the morning.

The center is moving over Rodgers River Bay...which empties into the GoMex...the eye on radar is starting to collapse, but it won't be long before the center is back over water.

On another forum, a poster mentioned that we may well be looking at history in the making here. I hope that poster is wrong, but it is a very good point.

What history? Lets see, center out over water sooner than forecast, futher south than forecast. How much futher west than forecast? NHC has a history of moving systems poleward too soon......MGC

The land is starting to effect this hurricane, unfortunatelly the very warm gulf stream is not far away. If it never took this southern jog, it would of had more land to encounter and probably would have weakened a lot more, even to what the 11:00 pm NHC stated.

When this storm hits the warm gulf waters will it begin to strengthen right away? Or are there any factors that would inhibit it? Thanks.

Check out the 0345 UTC doppler, when the west side of the collapsing eye hits the bay, the sudden explosion of yellow echoes....

all the ingredients exist for quick strengthing once it hits the gulf stream, very warm waters, little or no wind shear, very moist gulf meaning no dry air to at best very limited dry air, and because of its generally slow movement, it has a lot of time to strenghten

It will likely take at least 6-12 hours to re-organize.

We're down to 10 miles, and the eye has re-emerged in the last frame.

The NWS radar loop shows an intensification in the western banding, more yellows filling in west and north around the eye as the center flirts with the gulf... it tastes it already... warm, moist and salty...

We been watching this thing for over 2 weeks. In wondering what it would do if it made it into a favorable enviroment? We are about ready to find what it can do.

The center of the eye will be back over water in about one hour, near Ponce de Leon Bay or just north of that, around 26.4 N.
