Do you own a generator?
Well I finally broke down and bought a generator today. I live just outside New Orleans and plan on evacuating for any major storms. But the smaller storms can definately cause problems here below sea level. I have a sump pump that drains my yard, but after the mess with Cindy, I just couldn't afford to be without power for too long. I can sleep better now. Do any of you have a generator? Have you had the need to use it? How well did it work? Let's hope all of our generators can rest for a while!

Good point about the gas. But I figured that'd be the advantage to having two trucks with 24 gallon tanks.

I love the idea of using solar...unless your panels blow away. Yep, generators aren't particularly cheap but...for those of you living in America, there ARE deals to be had. My brother bought a Honda 1000 (not going to take care of a lot but certainly some basic items) for 100.00 bucks at a yard sale for his cabin in NC. Off season, people sell that stuff! And I haven't checked ebay but I bet there are some there for a decent price. Consider...two or three weeks without power versus one or two thousand dollars? If AC is your goal, well, never mind

yep, personally have a little one (enough for the fridge, freezer, maybe a small window AC). 4,300 I think? Used it when we were building our house and start it up for a bit every few months, but luckily have not had to use for long periods of time (just those few hours here and there we all experiece around thunderstorms and such). Also have an inverter with a battery that will run my 13 inch color TV for several hours on one charge, or a single light for probably a day or more). No fumes, very little noise (little cooling fan), and can be carried around with one hand.
For work I have a 7,000 and an 8,000, which I am sure I could borrow if needed (I am the boss).

Gonna be getting a 7500 Honda next time I think I am in 'my' personel 7 day cone. I have the one already picked out. I was going to get a whole home generator till I found out its anywhere from 5000 to 7000 to get a 1000 gallon propane tank installed. That would be on top of the 9000 generator. I have no access to natural gas.

Yes, Ive had one since 1999, and I have had to use it 3 times. Once for a week after an ice storm. It's a 5500 watt and it runs about everything in the house including my well pump. I live out in the country and have a 300 gallon gas tank. I put stabil in it so it last about a year and a half. When it gets to be around a year old I start filling the truck and my wifes car with it so I can get fresh gas.

I have a 15kw genny that I use to run my camp in cutoff La. but when storms are threatening I bring it home. Problem is it burns about 15 gallons of gas a night so I have to stockpile gas. I am thinking of getting a converter kit to run it on Natural Gas.

I have two big generators. I am looking into the generator that is installed that will automatically come on when the lights go out and runs everything in your home. The lowest price I have found thus far is $5,000.
