4 names retired

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Mon Apr 11, 2005 9:19 am

Recently the World Meteorological Organization's Hurricane Committee has retired four named storms from the 2004 Atlantic Hurricane Season.
The hurricanes retired are...

Charley
Frances
Ivan
Jeanne

This joins 60 other named storms that were retired including such memorable storms as Allison(2001), Hugo(1989), Andrew(1992), Camille(1969), Agnes(1972), and Isabel(2003). This only makes the third hurricane season in recorded history that four retired named storms occurred. The last time four named storms were retired in the Atlantic were in 1955 and 1995. When the same 2004 list appears in the year 2010, Charley, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne will be replaced with these named below.

Colin
Foina
Igor
Julia

Jim

Igor? As long as "Dr. Frankenstein" doesn't somehow appear on the list, I guess it's not that bad.

I think I called Igor and Fiona on here or net-weather.co.uk, and guessed Juliet for the J storm, so pretty close ;) They didn't go for Clyde to follow Bonnie though :(

Jim, where did you get this information? Could you please provide a link? I am trying to look for what you posted and so far I haven't found it.

Also, is it really "Foina" or "Fiona?"

Sorry, I'm just really picky and assertive.

I think it's Fiona.

Last year, when first released, they had "Ina" instead of "Ida" as Isabel's replacement name.

My early impressions:

Colin could make an impressive debut. Fish but C3 hurricane in 2010.
Fiona....nope. Weak TS debut
Igor, this name just doesn't sound like a big one to me right now.
Julia, interesting. Could be a C2 hurricane for the Caribbean, but no retirement in 2010.

But, we'll see.

Good to know the names already, all the names for me are good because they are short, and easy to pronounce.

I think retiring hurricanes is stupid. They should keep the names to remember how terrible the previous incarnation was.

Once someone gets hit by the hurricane especially hard hit, I don't think they want to remember its name again.

Hey, I can have some fun with the new ones, can't I? Seriously, may none be affected by the storms, but it's little different from the poll we always do every year of which name most sounds like the big one....just do these new names sound like big ones, yes or no.

When a name is retired, it authomatically goes to the "Hall of Fame" and will forever be remembered.

LOL. Thank God. I heard enough of that in school.

Hey Bonnie, where's Clyde!?

Knowing my luck, both storms would hit Florida if Clyde followed Bonnie.

Sure thing...it's all guess and game. I'll take a crack:

Colin-August Hurricane
Fiona-Nasty Caribbean storm
Igor-Maybe a weak TS or a Major for the North Gulf Coast
Julia-Major Hurricane

I'm having some serious trouble following your logic here, Scorpion.

As you get older and potentially enter the met community, you'll realise that you cannot use historic names multiple times. These historic storms are the subjects of extensive research studies. Using Ivan again, especially if Ivan is another bad one in 2010, is only going to confuse everyone in the met community
